Bob bought another Xbox 360 because of bioshock reviews

Xbox 360

The discussion about Nicoli owning all 3 new systems (Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, Sony PS3) has had over 80 comments which proves to be a really interesting read, but one comment from Bob (who seems to not like the 360) was also interesting.

Although I disagree will what he said about Halo 3, as I love that game and feel it’s brought many more gamers to the 360.

Here is Bob’s Comment:
Ok everyone, heres the deal, i just went out and bought another 360, because of the reviews that bioshock was getting. and so i went ahead and purchased bioshock as well. IT SUCKED. and everyone i have talked to, says the same thing, cool concept shitty graphics and gameplay. I also rented and am now playing halo 3. its absolutely no different than 1 or 2. just prettier. But uh, so you guys can call me a hypocrite. but i know when i get MGS4, and GT5, my 360 will be collecting dust. the only thing i have to look forward to now for the 360 is…oh mass effect, and halo wars. i hope they’re good. The 360s pretty much reached its technological limit. theres no way you guys can deny that.

by the way, all you guys that are ripping on the PS3, you should go out and buy one. you know you will when the price drops. its already starting to sell ALMOST as good as the wii is in japan. and if you say it wont start selling well when MGS4 comes out? think again. Rachet and Clank really boosted sales, and its just a kids game.

So i have what to look forward to on the PS3?
Haze, MGS4, GT5, both FF13s, Rachet and Clank, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, UT3(as of now, the 360 version cant be confirmed), and i guess heavenly sword, since i havent bought that yet.

i will say this though, yes sony really lied bout the ps3, and exagerated on quite a few things, but so has Nintendo and MS, its just the name of the game. and though the way games keep getting pushed back for the PS3 is depressing, its gunna be well worth my money when they all come out.

oh and blu-ray, IS a good idea, and im glad the PS3 has it, cause alot of the games coming out would not be possible without it. and i hear MS is coming out with a HD-DVD version of the 360. damn i guess i really feel cheated, since i just bought the “elite” verison.

All it boils down to everyone, is this, you cant get the same experience with just one console

the ps3 is still pricy with a shortage of games that take advantage of the hardware, but if you got to have GT, MGS, FF, then you got to get it. the console itself is far more reliable than any other. free online gaming, and its a very good blu-ray player.

the 360 as far as hardware goes, sucks. but online play, and its few exclusive games is what made me buy a THIRD one.

The wii is for kids and chicks, mario has fell far from the tree it was grown. though the ability to play all nintendo games is a first and a plus, though its going to chow down memory sticks, which will get expensive.

You cant disagree with that, that is my Completly Unbiased opinion. i have all three consoles i know all of their weaknesses and strengths. But in overall staying, and lasting power sony proves to be very loyal. i just wish that game designers would crack the cell a little faster and get the good games coming.

What does he know about technical limit?
Is he a programmer, chip designer, does he really understand the difference between architectures, float point maths, integer based maths, dot cross multipliers, bus speeds, the level of optimisation of core libraries, thread optimisation etc…Probably not. Check the maths not the directin of the wind!

  • artiom

Your a total moron! stop trying to portend that you know all the strengths and weaknesses of consoles as your just another idiot who knows shit!

  • Grover

Peter – you made yourself look very stupid there. Because ANYONE who has actually written code for the PS3, knows full well how much more processing capabilities the Cell has. The 3 core X360 CPU is just 3 PPC cores – which to be very honest are absoultely crap in terms of data processing caps. Its the whole reason the PS3 is being used in supercomputing solutions.

So Peter rather than sprouting some pretty fluffy BS, post some proof. CPU wise you wont find anything that can match a Cell SPU throughput in data processing. And that includes many specialised server CPU’s cores. So yes.. the PS3 really is a computationally impressive machine.. regardless of your fanboy impressions.

  • Grover

I should add a note about the X360 cores – the Cell has one PPC core for general use. And the performance is so poor on it, that most PS3 developers minimise the use of of it. The X360 is hampered with the fact that background kernel system uses a core, so there is actually only 2 ‘cores worth’ of processing really available on the X360 CPU. And additionally everyone should remember that X360 render targets are usually much lower resolution then upscaled (640×480 is very common) whereas the PS3 generally uses 1280×720 as minimum render target (almost 3x the amount of data per frame).. so even in standard rendering processing terms the PS3 DOES do alot more.. just because you dont know about it doesn’t mean it isn’t doing it.

Does any one ever really read these comments, or posts. I honestly cant believe this stuff half the time.

So I guess I will be a hypocrite and post a comment :-)

I honestly wish people would get over the whole “CELL” thing. Its totally, as it stands now, overated – and the concept is still in its infancy. Its not the be all end all of CPUs. Its simply a single IBM Power PC core with 7 SPEs. I think people still make the mistake in claiming and thinking that they are essentially seperate CPUs. They are not.

Its “simply” designed for very fast on the fly encoding/decoding (gross missunderstatement, I know – but I think for some it has to be put VERY simply if you know what I mean) – its specialty will lie in the integration of the home based setup.

This is something Sony mooted nearly 10 or more so years ago, the ability to have every single (Sony based) product in one house hold to be able to communicate with eachother. This is when they forst started announcing that they were working on a single SUPER cpu.Watch that space over the next few years. They might actually get there, but I tell you, it aint going to be this incarnation of CELL, thats for sure.

It is not even an ideal functioning model for multi-threaded coding, an area, which despite a few game companies have said they are able to pull off, is again, still very much in its infancy – especially on the mainstream level – ie to you.

If you really want to be “technical” the PS3 setup is absolutely lousy – plain and simple – for modern game setups. The majority of the work needed for the PS3 is not the so called difficulty of the CELL processor, but its lack of main memory, lack of video memory, and very slow load data-read speeds, and much slower bus speed, all in comparisson to the Xbox 360.

The CELL, despite what is said, is NOT an overly complicated piece of architecture. It has the potential to be quite elegant in fact.

Think to yourselves for a minute, peoples?
You have games on the PS3. Dev kits have only been out X amount of time. Both 360 and PS3 release are identical – dont be anal guys.

Yet, you will notice that the PS3 sufferes time and time again in comparison – just mildly – mind you. The issues being what? Framerate? Resolution? This are problems not associated with CELL, but less memory, fill rate, bus transfer etc. The only way to really optimize is for Sony to “cut the fat” from their supplied libraries. Thats it. Its very little, or nothing at all to do with CELL difficulty. The processors are a non event.

That will possibly be the only major problem for devs for both consoles in the near future.
1). Lack of memory on the PS3.
2). Lack of storage space on the Xbox 360.
Watch out for that one. It will be here sooner than you think, if not already.

Hence the heavy need for almost triple assest content on Blue Ray discs, and very heavy cache useage. But cheers to Sony anyways for bringing something new to the table. But to say that games that are comming out would not be possible without it are just plain rubbish. But not so if on the PS3… Its just a little bit different. Tis all.

You want to talk about technical limitations??

All it will take is one REALLY good game, yet to come, on the PS3, with exceptional graphics and very heavy scripting, and it will absolutely bring that machine to its knees. Just because of the Single PPC core, and small ammount of memory. If you have actually looked at the way the PS3 “works”, it is a very laborious process !! There is so much to and fro before it even gets into the pipeline for post processing, any benefit that the CELL even began to pose is vanquished.

But everyone, just bear this in mind. The Xbox 360, for all the bagging it gets, is really quite a powerfull piece of kit. It has 3 seperate PPC cpus, which basically equates to 6 hardware threads. It has more memory to play with, a superior GPU, and superfast bus rate.

All the BS talked about GOW pushing the 360 is almost toss. Sorry. It was only running on two thread system. And even that engine was very buggy and “heavy” at the time. If not totally overated in its own right as well.

Honestly, if MS decided to put some form of a HD disc in it, Blu Ray or HD-DVD, the damn thing would be almost future proof, with the exception of the over heating, ofcourse.

Because, as it stands, the PS3 only has the storage space over the 360. Its not anymore “advanced” at all, and in many ways, slightly less.

Anyways, ive gone on a bit. Sorry.
Sometime soon, some dev will get around to managing the PS3 with a par excellence attitude. It looks like Infinity Ward might just be there.
Take it easy, guys. Sorry for going on a bit.

  • http://www.product-reviews.net/2007/10/28/2nd-gen-65nm-xbox-360-who-is-waiting/ The guy who knows

Well what about the memory constraints that are driving PS3 devs insane? If the PS3 is so much better why do all the developers say it is easier to go from PS3 – 360 where as 360 – ps3 = crappy port? It is because the 360 has a better design that realized the importance more flexible memory plain and simple.

  • Artiom

Grove can you post some links where you got you info please, sounds interesting, surely in the future if you need to use 3 cores they will make it available. The main factor for me is the online gaming and so far 360 owns everyone in that.

What is funny about this is that his comments sound exactly like what I hear from people that ONLY own a PS3. My friend and I own a movies, music and games store and we get to hear a lot of fanboy nonsense. Here is the breakdown from the frontlines, actual feedback from our customers… The Wii is a great system for families and to break out at parties. Families that buy it for their younger children love it and have enjoyed getting to play as a family. “Gamers” who have bought it find the games to be lacking depth and either it’s collecting dust or they have sold it. As a matter of coincidence, they all said they played their 360 more. The 360 gets great reviews from it’s customers, although I find that most of them don’t know much about the full range of the features of the system. They like the games, Xbox Live and Achievements. Major complaint? More good games than they can afford to buy. The PS3 is a tough sell for us. This may have more to do with the neighborhood, but PS3 stuff does not sell. Not the system, not the accessories, not the games. The three customers that we have that have the system also have 360s and buy more games for the 360. They bought it for future games and will pre-order what they want. Other than their pro-orders, I may only sell 1-2 PS3 games off of the shelf in any month. As a retailer, I can’t help but be disappointed with it’s sales performance. Sony did very well in our previous location, but that was in a much different neighborhood and before the PS3 and Wii launched. I would really like PS3 to take off so that I can stop losing money on carrying it. Just this last month, I ended up losing $25 per unit per title on 6 different titles, due to price drops on new games that I had not sold since their initial release. For my own gaming needs, I really only have time for one. I think the Wii is a great concept, but it doesn’t hold much appeal for me. The 360 is what I own and it is a great fit. I belong to a large social gaming network (Pre-Game Lobby) and the unified Friends List with cross-game invites and messaging is perfect for that. The PS3 would be a Blu-Ray player for me, if I ever bought one. The major exclusives that Bob listed for the PS3 are sequels of games that I didn’t really enjoy, even though I know I am in the minority on some of those titles. The multi-platform titles are ones that I would always buy on the 360, for the social network and achievements. To sum it all up, none of the systems “suck.” All three systems are perfect for someone, but the 360 seems to offer the best value and most options for the most people. Live Marketplace for demos, game content, TV show purchase and movie rentals is something that Microsoft really needs to start marketing. As a retailer, I can tell you that most people, even those that own the system, don’t even know those features exist. Cheers!

Sorry about the lack of paragraph breaks. I didn’t proof read. Dang ol’ stream of thought.

  • Shane

thats biased….mass effect will be the first of a trilogy…gears of war will be the first of a trilogy….they`re making a new halo trilogy…left 4 dead…..bioshock got a high rating….u probably asked ps3 fanboys if they liked bioshock….

  • tim G

the xbox 360 is the best console so far. i actually own all 3. i have 15 games for the 360 and 2 for the ps3 and 7 for the wii. the 360 definately has plenty of staying power as well as the ps3 but according to developers the ps3 is a pain to develope for and that is posing a problem for sony. i am a xbox fan but the ps3 is ok

  • vm

The reason you buy Xbox 360 is FP Shooters. The reason you buy PS3 is everything else games. Btw, Wii on hdtv just sucks.

  • Jimi

omg, lol. anyone and everyone is denying it!
is this guy a sony fanboy (poorly) presenting himself as being unbiased? yes.
the xbox 360 always has and always will have a better selection of games than the ps3, and is more advanced than the ps3. i have yet to be impressed by anything on the ps3. and i really hate the ps3 user interface. they just ripped it from the psp. maybe some effort next time sony?

  • billytech

This is a stupid post, just a rant. This guy is dismissed as an idiot. End of story.

  • Mike

I can’t belive people are still backing the 360! sure it has better games at the mo, but the ps3 has a beter selection of quality genre’s, by december the ps3 will have the better games with tools of destruction, little big planet, haze and uncharted, the 360 has mass effect that’s it. In 2008 i actually can’t find anything that looks remotly in intresting the next big game will be gears of war 2 in 2009 by that time the ps3 will have mgs4, ff13, ms 2,rfom 2, killzone 2, home and even god of war 3.

  • inty2525

what a crap of an article…. do yourself a favor and drown yourself, you are wasting precious O2. You just confirmed you are an idiot…

  • Chad

I totally agree with him. My 360 has broke 4 times and it took over 5 weeks each time to get back to me. F@#%… And sure bioshock does look cool, but I dont see anything good enough about it to get a 10/10. I would give it a 7.5/10 and Halo 3 a 7/10

  • fdasfa

How can sony rip the psp user interface off. Sony makes the psp!! Man your dumb. This almost as bad as people arguing over the font on the ps3. Sony made that font for the spiderman movies so they can use it on whatever they want.

  • Paul

Tech specs are irelivant. Look at the PS2, it saw off Dreamcast and Gamecube, both better machines on paper.

Gameplay is king, graphics are just icing on the cake.
