Martina Hingis, the former world tennis number one has tested positive for cocaine. The tennis star, nicknamed the Swiss Miss won the grand slam championship an amazing five-times. She retired at the age of 22 only to return to the game. At a news conference she revealed she had tested positive during this year’s Wimbledon tournament.
Hingis denied taking the drug and also claimed she was retiring from the game for the second time. Hingis won Wimbledon in 1997 but was knocked out in the 2007 tournament in the third round by Laura Granville of the US.
Martina has been playing tennis for almost two years after her four-year retirement due to injury. The accusations come as tennis finds itself under the microscope like never before, with betting rings accused of offering cash to players to throw matches.
What do you think of sports players involved in drug allegations? Do you think they have a duty to keep a clean image to retain their ‘role model’ status?
