Biggest Band Numbers: Beatles, U2, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Green Day

Beatles
When we spoke the other day about some people thinking Green Day was the biggest band ever and I thought it was surely The Beatles, we had a comment from Pat who showed us some numbers from results returned by Google for each of the biggest bands.

This is not the best way to find out who is the biggest band, but it is an interesting one, although Green Day could become the biggest band ever in time like many other newer bands.

Here is Pat’s comment:
Here’s the list of number of results returned by google. Now you tell me who is the biggest band.

“Beatles” - 55,800,000
“U2″ - 47,000,000
“Rolling Stones” - 9,890,000
“Pink Floyd” - 8,420,000
“Green Day” - 6,570,000
“The Who” - 6,550,000
“Led Zeppelin” - 4,940,000
“Iron Maiden” - 3,000,000
“Public Enemy” - 2,280,000

Look up anybody you want. Only U2 comes close to the Beatles and that’s probably because it’s also the name of a spy plane as well as only 2 letters that probably occurs millions of times having nothing to do with the band.

Now what do you make of that?

…and Beatles gets millions of hits from bug enthusiasts, homeowners with pest problems, and people searching for used Volkswagons. Come on, U2 has this one hands down.

“yeah Sure” should may want to pick up a dictionary. I doubt so many are as confused over the spelling of Beetle and Beatles as he/she apparently is.

Yeh Sure, my home has a bug problem, should I call I Paul or Ringo?

To the first poster…. Hopefully people who are looking up the bug “Beetle” or the car “Beetle” would spell “B-e-e-t-l-e” correctly, and therefore not effect the Google hit count!

    I think the Stones rule!

  7. Andrew on November 1st, 2007 8:32 pm

and if you goggle stones, rolling stones you get 55,900,000

  8. Andrew on November 1st, 2007 8:33 pm

    Googling ’stones,rolling stones’ get 55,900,000

  9. Edvado on November 2nd, 2007 11:50 am

    “GOOGLING ’stones,rolling stones’”

And your point is? If you customise the search well enough, you can make Google return results that prove The Monkees were bigger.

By the way, since this article was first posted, “Beatles” is up to 57,000,000. That shows they’re not only the biggest, but still growing at an AMAZING pace!

how many of the 47 million U2 hits were for the Spy plane? 20? haha
i’m not saying U2 are bigger then the Beetles, but dont even think of putting Green Day in the same sentence as U2

  12. Andrew on November 2nd, 2007 9:50 pm

78,900,000 is my point … the original premise was that the Beatles garnered more hits than the named bands … yet my simple google-search on ’stones’ had way way way way more hits than the Beatles. Seems that the Beatles are gathering more hits today but they are still way way way way behind the stones - google-wise and music-wise too!

…and don’t be bringing the Monkees into to this musical tete-a-tete, and as for U2 they’re just a bunch of Dublin bowsies.

  14. GMAN on November 5th, 2007 10:52 pm

    yeah…ok…

U2 still puts out amazing albums. The Stones….when they were in their 20th year, like U2 is now, the album they released was “Dirty Work”

…hardly an album to remember. And it only got worse from there.

  15. harley on November 6th, 2007 8:28 am

regardless, you guys still aren’t taking their MUSIC into account, who cares how many google hits “stones” gets. you can also have a geographical distinction, You can say Green Day are the best u.s.a. band and still have beatles in a league of their own. another point is, in my lifwtime i have NEVER heard a beatles song, and the only thing the rolling stones appear to be good for is appearing on the simpsons. so you are left with. Best Band from america: Green Day. Best band from UK: U2.

and did anyone take AC/DC into account? many people consider them to be the beast band? you could also add that AC/Dc are the best band from australia.

i would continue but i have to go now.

I remember Dirty Work by the stones, any album with Jimmy Page, Bobby Womack and Tom Waits on it is well worth a listen to. From the album their cover of “Harlem Shuffle” was released to a receptive audience, reaching #13 in the UK and #5 in the US. Dirty Work was released a week after “Harlem Shuffle”, reaching #4 in the UK and the US (going platinum there). So while not a blindingly brilliant album it did OK. The Stones have had 34 Top Ten albums … not bad at all, at all.

.. ahem…U2 are, like meself, IRISH. They don’t hail from the UK. AC/DC are (or should be) up there with the best, Motorhead too, Deep Purple, Cream,,,, I would continue too but I have to go as well

  17. Yeah Sure on November 7th, 2007 4:26 pm

Tref & Woody, thanks for pointing out that you know how to spell Beetle. I do as well. Unfortunately, you guys give internet idiots way too much credit. There are millions of hits out there relating to Volkswagon “Beatles”. You should try that whole google thing, and see what you really come up with. Oh yeah, check out GMAN’s spelling of “Beetles”. I think my point is made.

  18. GMAN on November 8th, 2007 12:40 am

think about how many idiots misspelled U@
    hahahahah…i mean….U2

  19. Andrew on December 18th, 2007 3:19 pm

    I googled “GMAN”:>

    Results 1 - 10 of about 1,780,000 for GMAN

    And then I googled “Andrew”:>

    Results 1 - 10 of about 181,000,000 for Andrew

which makes me bigger than the beatles and u2

    wahaaaay!
