It has been reported that England are entitled to bid to host the 2018 World Cup finals after Fifa, the football governing body, got rid of its system of rotating the event round continents. The Football Association has already expressed interest in trying to stage the even and it has the backing of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Chung Mong-Joon, the vice-president of Fifa’s executive committee made the announcement and all that’s left if for Fifa officials to rubber-stamp it.
England would face stiff competition from rivals including China, Australia, The US, Mexico and Russia. Under the current system in place, the World Cup went to Africa for 2010 and South America for 2014.
With the old system in place, the 2018 World Cup would go to a country from North America, Central America or the Caribbean.
Sepp Blatter, Fifa president, was concerned that only the one country - Brazil - bid for 2014 and said last week that he wanted a change.
Talking to Sky News, he said,
“What I have said during the week, also at 10 Downing Street, (that) if this will happen then England can have a bid and, I would say, it would be a strong bid.”
The last time England hosted the World Cup was in 1966 where they went on to win the cup in the classic “they think it’s all over” final with West Germany.

It’s about time ‘football came home’. Considering this is the country where football was invented, it is pretty slack that we have only hosted the tournamnet once. I’m nearly 40 and it’s not been here in my lifetime.
Don’t understand why the US ever hosted it considering very few people in that country is interested in the sport and Germany (where I live at the moment) have held it twice!
