The UK’s obsession for mobile phones and gadgets is seriously damaging our love lives a new survey has revealed.

Sales of gadgets are expected to reach in excess of £50 million this Christmas but relationship experts are warning romance will be relegated if we continue our relentless pursuit of technology.

The survey, carried out by www.stuffshow.co.uk - the UK’s premier gadget show, revealed that a staggering 26% of men have admitted interrupting intimate moments to answer phone calls or text messages. Some have even confessed to thinking about texts and calls during sex.

18 to 34-year-olds are most likely to use mobile technology to keep on top of work commitments. The levels dip at older age groups but 12% of people over 55 had said they have risked the anger of a partner by taking a call at an intimate moment.

The UK gadget market, which boasts more mobile phones than people, is booming and is now worth a staggering £8 billion a year.

The survey, conducted among 1,950 men revealed that 89% own a technical gadget, including a mobile phone, mp3 player, Blackberry, laptop, electronic personal organiser or a PSP.

A shameful nine per cent have thought about important texts or calls during sex. Londoners appear the most addicted as they score the highest in dependency ratings for gadgets.

More than 30% of people aged 18 to 34 confess that they spend too much time using or playing on their favourite gadgets and 12% admitted they couldn’t even leave their technology at home if they went away on a romantic weekend.

“We know that gadgets and phones have a huge influence on our lives but we were surprised by the number of people who put their love life in jeopardy simply to keep in touch,” said Rob Nathan from Stuff magazine. “Technology makes life easier but it is a brave or foolish person who risks a relationship by paying attention to a mobile phone rather than their loved one.”

The Stuff Show takes place in London on 2-4 November.
