Ridley Scott’s American Gangster Leaked Online

The first Oscar screener has been leaked online, marking the beginning of the ‘For Your Consideration’ season. Ridley Scott’s new film American Gangster has been leaked a week and a half before the official release date.

The film has been uploaded to the bit torrent networks and has been downloaded by tens of thousands of people already. Normally, pirated movies are known for their awful bad quality video camera taped copies. With Award Season Screener, the movie quality is just as good as retail DVD releases.

While this may not have to much of an affect on how the film performs at the US Box Office when it’s released on November 2nd, it’s release in other world territories could suffer as it is released as late as February 2008.

Whether or not the film still gets the results it expects at US Box offices is debateable. Hollywood horror guru Eli Roth recently blamed piracy for lower than expected box office numbers for Hostel: Part II. The work print for the film was leaked a week before the movie’s national release.

Do you think film studios use piracy as an excuse for a poor box office result?
