The body of a woman who was found in a Majorcan cave has been identified by Spanish police as the body of Sara Cooper, a British holidaymaker whose daughter fell from a hotel balcony. Seven-year-old Gianna, suffered severe injuries after her 30ft fall from a fifth-floor balcony at the families hotel in Calas de Majorca on Monday.
Mrs Cooper, who also has three sons, disappeared after the incident. Police found the body on Wednesday night in a seaside cave near the hotel. In the village of Foxton, Cambridgeshire friends of the Cooper family spoke about their disbelief at the tragedy.
The mother of a school friend of Gianna has said,
“Sara was the perfect mother. She doted over her daughter. I just can’t believe it. She loved Gianna - she idolised her. If she did this because she thought Gianna was dead I can kind of understand it. She always defended her children when they needed defending and did whatever needed to be done for them.”
Gianna is currently recovering in hospital. A spokesperson said, “Local police were working on the beach and saw a woman floating in a cave. She was wearing jeans and a blue shirt.”
Police are currently investigating a number of theories surrounding the girl’s fall and her mother’s death. Ian Cooper, Gianna’s father has thanked the staff at the Manacor and Son Dureta Hospitals in Majorca for their “excellent care and support” of Gianna.

Theory:
Gianna and Sara are playing. Sara lifts Gianna up to the balcony, something goes wrong and the kid falls to the rootop below.
Frantic, Sara dashes downstairs to the beach, where she assumes her daughter must be in the water (presuming this is a seaside hotel).
Sara gets caught up in the tide and drowns, her body floats into the cave where it is later found.
Verdict: accidental death/misadventure.
