Now, although I’ve read the books and seen the movies, I wouldn’t class myself as a Harry Potter expert. I would, however, expect to be able to tell the sexual preference of a main character. Obviously I was wrong. In a shocking twist that no Harry Potter fan ever expected, JK Rowling announced at a book reading in New York that the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Albus Dumbledore, is actually gay!
Well I never! Rowling went on to say that the character originally fell in love with the wizard Gellert Grindelwald, who, is apparently the second Most Dangerous Dark Wizard of All Time after Voldemort according to Rita Skeeter’s book The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore.
In the book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it was revealed that Grindelwald was an adolescent friend of Albus Dumbledore and that the two had planned to establish a new world order, where wizards would rule over Muggles “for the greater good.”
An argument resulted in a three-way battle between Albus, Aberforth Dumbledore and Grindelwald in which Albus’ disabled sister Ariana was accidentally killed by one of them. Fearing retribution, Grindelwald fled, ending his friendship with Albus.
Talking about Dumbledore’s feelings, JK Rowling said,
“Falling in love can blind us to an extent. He was horribly, terribly let down.”
Rowling went on to say that she had recently read through Steve Kloves’ script for the movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. She came across a scene where Dumbledore reminisces about his past-loves. Apparently, the super-scribe crossed out the passage, simply writing in the margin ’Dumbledore is gay’.
What do you think about Dumbledore being gay - did you ever think he was?
