South Africa has won the Rugby World Cup. What a game! England vs. South Africa was the final game of the Rugby World Cup 2007 and being English I couldn’t be prouder of our boys, even though we lost. The game was so intense, with South Africa dominating the first half. Percy Montgomoery opened the scoring with a three-pointer after Mathew Taite slipped, becoming isolated in the ruck.
Jonny Wilkinson equalised just 7 minutes later after South Africa’s Bryan Habana was called for lying on the tackled player, Paul Sackey. South Africa then pushed the margin to six points when they were awarded a penalty.
In the second half, the England boys came back refreshed and with a new drive. England were soon awarded a penalty with Jonny Wilkinson kicking for another 3 pointer. It seemed like England could pull back but South Africa were awarded another penalty, giving them a 6 point lead over England, which they continued to hold 53 minutes into the game.
It looked as if England’s dreams of retaining the cup were slowly slipping away as efforts for a try were continually stopped by an amazing South African defence.
England held their own, creating many chances to score. However, silly mistakes meant South Africa earned another penalty taking them from a 6 point lead to a wide margin of 9 points.
England bought on the big guns with Lawrence Dallaglio hoping to fasten the pace and close the point margin. South Africa ploughed on defending their lead. With 6 minutes to go, the 9 point lead South Africa had over England seemed set in stone, despite best efforts by Mathew Tait.
With two minutes to go the score was 6-15 to South Africa. For much of the game, South Africa has always held the ace card in the game, with their efforts resulting in them winning them the Rugby World Cup 2007
