We have just learned from Sky News that the BBC is indeed going to axe 1,800 jobs, and they will also be selling of Television Centre in West London by 2012. These plans are hoped to help save the broadcaster £2bn. Director-general Mark Thompson has been in a series of briefings to make even further cuts, and this has angered unions who have already threatened the BBC with industrial action against these proposals.
It looks as though hundreds of jobs could be lost in the BBC’s factual division; this division brings us great programs such as Planet Earth and Top Gear. Around 600 jobs could be lost in news and sport, and it is also thought that not as many new programs will be made and we will have to watch more repeats.
