12 to 18 3D Movies In Theaters By 2010

Earlier this week at ShowEast in Orlando, DreamWorks Animation’s Jeffrey Katzenberg told an audience of theater owners that there is expected to be 12 to 18 full 3D movies by 2010. Best dust our 3D glasses off then!

Katzenberg went on to say that movie theaters can expect there to be “5, 6 or 7 ‘Super-A’ titles” in full 3D. DreamWorks will be making 2 or 3 of these in 2009. In 2010 that number will increase around 2 or 3 times - taking the total up to 12 to 18.

I’m quite a fan of 3D cinema. They are always treated like an event, which makes people want to go to the multiplex and see them. But (and it’s a big but) surely having 12 - 18 of these 3D ‘event’s a year will take away the novelty value of them? Whether the target of 18 ‘Super-A’ films is achievable, we’ll have to wait and see.
