Preparations are underway for the first town in the UK to switch from analogue to digital television. At around 2am tomorrow (Wednesday), BBC Two will no longer be broadcast in analogue in Whitehaven, Cumbria. The remaining analogue channels will then be permanently switched off four weeks later.
Households in the area will be able to receive at least 18 channels digitally, with some in certain areas picking up more channels. Pupils at Jericho Primary School are marking the switchover by burying an analogue time capsule.
To help with the switchover, anyone aged 75 or over, severely disabled, blind or partially sighted will receive equipment to convert their TV set, help with installation and follow-up support. Digital UK will be sending leaflets to every household in the UK telling them about the switchover and what they need to do.
It is hoped that the whole of the UK will switch to digital-only television by 2012.

Whilst people are ready for the switch in terms of having the right equipment, some might be a little daunted when confronted by the variety of options in front of them for the first time.
So the industry, more than ever, needs to ensure that services are easy to use and that user interfaces are straight forward and simple to navigate. Get this right and set-top box sales will continue to grow.
