Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, has been told of a plot to assassinate him according to a Kremlin spokeswoman. The Russian President was due to visit Iran this week, which is where the attack was meant to take place.
The spokeswoman refused to give further details although a source in Russia’s special services has claimed that suicide bombers had been trained to carry out the assassination. President Putin is due to travel to Tehran on Monday night after meetings with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany.
During his Iran visit, he will also meet Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and attend Tuesday’s summit of Caspian Sea nations.
Mr Putin’s trip will make him the first Kremlin leader to travel to the country since Josef Stalin attended the 1943 wartime summit with Winston Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt.
The assassination plot is not the first Mr Putin has been subjected to, officials have said they uncovered at least two other plots to kill the Russian President on foreign trips since he was elected in 2000.
