Al Gore Has Won A Nobel Peace Prize

Al Gore, the former US Vice President turned environmental campaigner has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Gore was named joint winner of the coveted prize at a ceremony in Norway with the UN climate channel.

The Nobel Prize is the latest honour for Gore, who calls himself as the man who “used to be the next president of the United States. David Attenborough, broadcaster, said,

“it recognises the reality of the threat that faces the world and the leadership that Al Gore has given on this matter. He has been campaigning on this and talking about this and trying to raise international awareness of the problem for decades. It’s splendid that he should get this high profile recognition.”

After serving as Bill Clinton’s Vice President between 1993 and 2001, Gore ran for the top job losing to Republican George Bush after a series of controversial series of recounts in Florida.

Mr Gore won an Oscar earlier this year for his film An Inconvenient Truth.

The Norwegian Nobel committee works in secret, only releasing the number of candidates. There were 181 for this year’s prize.

It keeps the names of candidates secret for 50 years, and refuses to release any shortlist or give hints ahead of the prize. The winner’s are often a huge surprise.
