Take a look at the two videos to these songs and let us know what you think.
What video is better and has more impact?
Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends
The video for Wake Me Up When September Ends generally detaches itself from the meaning of the song and focuses on the story of the teenage couple as the boyfriend promises to never leave his girlfriend. The video then shows an argument between the couple with the girlfriend saying “How could you do this to me?”. At first we assume he has been unfaithful but it is soon revealed that he has enlisted in the Unites States Marine Corps without her knowledge. The video then shows the boyfriend in battle (presumably in Iraq) until we see him running from an explosion until the video suddenly cuts to a crying girlfriend.
This video adds to the American Idiot anti-war sentiment of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq.
Avril Lavigne – When You’re Gone
Avril Lavigne’s video for When You’re Gone is a tear jerker. The video follows the stories of three people who have to say goodbye to their loved ones but in three different circumstances. First off, there’s a teenage girl who, after being caught with her boyfriend by her mother, is locked in her bedroom to deal with her heartbreak. Then we see a pregnant woman, who has to say goodbye to her boyfriend who is in the army. Lastly, we see an older gentleman who is laying out a dress and pouring some champagne. As the video progresses, we see the people in the video break out from where they are to be comforted by different things.
