Burmese Authorities Seize Weapons From Buddhist Monasteries

It has been reported that Burmese authorities have seized weapons from Buddhist monasteries and made dozens of new arrests. The move from the Burmese authorities rebels against global outrage over the violent repression of protesters who demonstrated against 45 years of military dictatorship.

According to reports, the raids on the monasteries found 18 knives, one axe, slingshots and one 9mm bullet. The government threatened to punish any monks who violate the law.

The New Light paper has said, monks must adhere to the laws of God and the government. If they violate those laws, action could be taken against them”.

Security in the largest city of Rangoon has eased more then a week after soldiers and police opened fire on the demonstrators.
A few roadblocks were removed and visitors slowly began to return to the heavily guarded Shwedagon and Sule pagodas.

The junta says that at least 10 people were killed in the crackdown on the demonstrations between September 26 to 27. Independent sources say the death toll was likely to be higher and some protestors remain in detention centres.
