Will Michael Jackson ever make a come back in the Music Charts?

October 5, 2007 | Filed under Celebrity News, Music, News

Michael Jackson
When I grew up I had Michael Jackson posters all around my room as well as Madonna posters, I owned all of Michael Jackson’s albums and have seen him own the music charts over the years.

But one question I keep thinking is, will Michael Jackson ever make a come back?

I do think it is possible as he has such a big following and when I compared Michael Jackson to Donald Trump on a famous level I saw all of Michael Jackson’s fans supporting him as by far the most famous and known by most of the world.

So with that kind of fan base it must be possible to have a number one hit single and album again, surely.

He IS making a comeback, but is deciding whether to sell his albums as CDs or online, since the producer of the album is “Will.I.Am” and he’s like the king of selling online music. Either way it’s going to be a blast. Cant wait for it!

If anyone can do it, Michael can. I honestly don’t like the sound of the word “comeback.” People called his last album, 2001’s ‘Invincible’ a failure, but it debuted at number 1 in 13 countries and sold over 8 million copies. In 2005, Mariah Carey sold 10 million copies of her comeback album ‘Emancipation of Mimi.’ It was called a huge commercial success and ended up being the best-selling album of the year. How could 10 million be a massive success and 8 million be a total failure? I just think people like to demean whatever Mike does, no matter how impressive. And now the public has bought into the lie that Michael hasn’t been successful since the 80’s. When the true facts are that every single solo album has ended up being very successful. Dangerous, HIStory, and Invincible (all post 1980’s) were some of the biggest albums of the year.

I think Michael Jackson can DEFINITELY make a comeback. ((this is Michael Jackson we’re talking about)). He’s working on a new album and is also studying proposals for Concert World Tour next year. I think the album will be a hit since he had to go through gruesome trial. He’s REALLY putting his time and effort into making this a good album! He’s also collaborating w/ Akon, Will.I.Am, Ne-Yo, and possibly Usher and Justin Timberlake. I think he’s making smart moves.

Jackson must come clean and admit to his inappropriate behavior with young boys. Before his criminal trial in California, he went on ABC Television and stated he was going to take the witness stand and defend himself against the allegations. He, of course, did not take the stand. In the mind of the public, that move meant he had something to hide.
Coming clean, is obviously not an option for him due to the legal ramifications it would cause. This leaves him in the present situation. His career is over.

  13. Chris on October 6th, 2007 1:35 am

I certainly think it’s possible. I attended the World Music Awards last November and I can tell you whatever you saw on TV multiply it by a thousand. The crowd were amazing! Everybody and I mean EVERYBODY was cheering for Jackson. I mean just a few weeks ago people went crazy because they thought a new MJ song was leaked! turns out it was a fake but I think it will be worth the wait when his album comes out.. None of his albums have been failures.

Michael Jackson is very likely to enjoy a number one album but a number one single is questionable. Invincible didn’t pull off a number one single in the US or UK with the strongest single ‘You Rock My World’ making it to #10 in hot 100 and #2 in UK charts (beaten to #1 by Kylie with Cant Get You Out of My Head). Invincible itself debuted at number one in many countries across the world giving a clear indication of a solid, global fanbase unfased by the media circus that surrounds him and his recent legal issues.
Invincible sold around 8 million copies worldwide which is a great sales figure but for Michael Jackson it was a total flop (History sold 18 million). It quickly fell from number one, out of the charts again giving a strong indication that only die hard fans were buying his music and he no longer attracted the middle of the road market. The dispute between Jackson and Sony meant the album was not properly promoted which couldnt have helped (we saw a megastar like Jackson signing bloody albums in a record shop in NYC for Gods sake) so if the new album gets good promotion, together with a tour to create that classic Jackson hysteria, theres a good possiblity he could smash the 8 million figure and beat his last effort in 2001.
It is worth noting that the new album will need stronger singles to help promote it too. Invincible was quite frankly, crap. Aside from You Rock My World, Whatever happens, Butterflies and Heaven Can Wait, it was utter tosh. And even those songs weren’t strong singles! Whilst they were excellent musical efforts, it wasn’t good enough pop music.
Michaels fans will always buy his music and younger people are discovering the legend everyday so his fan base is being maintained. He’s had four decades in the business and has touched the hearts of several generations so people will always be interested in what he’s doing and buy his music.
If he tours and the album has some good songs on it, he can sell 2-15 million records and have 2 number one singles, EASY. Those are the figures a superstar should achieve.
If he doesnt tour and the album is average, we’ll see Invincible all over again and im sure even you die hard fans wouldnt want that…. ooooh no.
My guess is Jacko wil be pissed off and feeling political like on CD2 of History. We’ll see some 2Bad’s,Stranger in Moscow/They Dont Care about Us/XSCAPE-esque stuff, which will be great. We love MJ when he’s angry, his pop days are long gone so we may aswell listen to him shout and moan about the world and his life… I like it anyway. :o)

Ofcourse i know he WILL make a comeback because he still has a ton of fans ALL over the world who still love and support him and i hate how we have to put up with this bullshit where haters try to make us hate him or make us hesitant the next time someone askes us if we love the king of pop because we fear that we have to hear MJ be ridiculed and put down again and it hurts US as well but i’m sure it hurts him more imagine what he has to go through…. you know back in the day you were a loser if you didn’t like him now it seems that people think we are the losers MICHAEL WILL MAKE A COMEBACK AND I KNOW US FANS WILL LOVE AND SUPPORT HIM UNTILL THE DAY WE DIE AND MICHAEL IS MY FUTURE HUSBAND SO HA!!

  16. Angela on October 6th, 2007 2:38 am

Michael Jackson’s music has survived on the charts for years and years without having to bring out new material. No other artist these days can even come close to Michael’s talent & abilities. I do believe when his new album is released it will be one that will go down in History! MJ deserves every ounce of credit & success! He does and will always have a huge fan supporting across the world. Go get em Michael! Can’t wait!

A successful Michael Jackson comeback consists of two things:

    1. An absolute KILLER album. The album needs to have catchy, never-before-heard sounds, and it needs to have at least 4 or 5 number 1 hits.

    2. Michael needs to have an awesome video clip for at least his first single and he needs to do a tour to support the album. He needs to prove he has still got the magic he had all through the 80s and 90s.

Personally, what I think Michael needs to do is to make music like he did in the 80s but with a modern twist. He should not succumb to the garbage type music out there these days with all the rap and gangsta feel, he should focus on a lot of dance beats and sounds that instantly stick in your head. Catchy songs drive album sales.

Also, the vast majority of youth these days don’t know Michael Jackson the singer, they only know Michael Jackson the ‘weirdo’. If Michael can change the youths perception, and show them the power he has when it comes to music and dance, I think there would be no stopping him.

It’s not an easy task, especially when the media want him to fail so they can report what another disgraceful situation he is in. But might I just say that Michael Jackson’s career has been declared dead at many various times in the past 30 years or so, but he is still here, making another album.

If anyone can make an awesome comeback, it’s definitely MJ.

  18. Christopher on October 6th, 2007 3:12 am

Michael Jackson hasn’t released an album of all-new material since ‘Invincible’, released in October of 2001. And that was met with generally dreadful reviews, and quite low sales, for Jackson anyway (over 8 million sold so far). With the recent events in Jacksons life, it seems unlikely he will ever make a return to form. I believe even with an inspired/infectious recording, it will still be branded a flop. Not forgetting his ‘Number Ones’ compilation, sold 6 million copies, and that was at the exact same time he was accused of child abuse a second time. I doubt any artist could shift that amount of albums, if they were accused of such a crime. Simply put, Jackson has a strong fan base, but his creative output since 1995’s ‘HIStory’ album has been uninspired, and the world probably has fallen out of love with him. His career relies strongly on past glories, with the issuing of no less than 5 greatest hit’s packages since 1995. He did enjoy enormous success on his HIStory world tour, performed throughout 1996-1997, which set attendance records wherever he went. There are sponsors willing to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at Jackson if he was willing to do a world tour, but it’s a process he admitted to hating, as it’s too stressful. That aside, Jackson really hasn’t been an entertainer since his HIStory world tour wrapped in 1997, that’s a decade of him getting rustier and rustier. He made stiff appearances at the 2001 MTV VMA’s with NSYNC, and even dancing on stage with James Brown whilst presenting him with an award in 2003. Given what he’s achieved in his life, he needn’t worry ever releasing a new album to prove himself as an artist, or stage a world tour, to prove himself as an entertainer, because he’s already done that - and long ago. The Guinness World Records confirmed at the 2006 World Music Awards that Thriller had sold 104 million copies, with 750 million records sold throughout his career, Michael Jackson has enough money to last him, he’s earned in excess of $1 billion in his lifetime. So with that, he needn’t worry ever working again.

why not, this is actually a dumb question about an incredible pop star

Michael could make a comeback. Honestly, how many of you MJ fans can honestly tell me u won’t buy the c.d. if it wasn’t hot new shit? I would buy his cd even if it were an instrumental. And no real fan can sit here and say they wouldn’t buy tickets for his concert just to see the old shit. From Rock With You to You Rock My World.

He doesn’t need to make a comeback, but he could.
Shit, Michael could throw a farewell tour and be rich all over again.

I LOve Mj since i was 3… i really admire his face “before”…and i found him so energetic! and i hope mike will realize that he is more handsome with his curly hair with ponytail like what he had in his BAD to BLOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR album..i hope so..his hairdo he has right now should be thrown out.. i dont know! but i think many of us,wish that he still looks like the mike before.i mean, with lighter make up,and greater hair..AGREE??.but i believe that he can still make it.Wow..That’s Michael jackson..i think no one replaced his greatness in everything.he will always be the best.we love him and either non-mj fans can easily be amazed with his songs and moves..no Doubt, he will be on the top again..
But his FACE is also one factor for his success..Girls turn to be crazy whenever he comes out the stage before..i hope until now..i really wish the best for the king..love him so much.

I Agree With U he’s the most famous artist in the Music History nay artist can come close to his Legacy I’m so Sure That MJ will be @ the Top of the Charts.
No matter what Bull-sh*** could be said ’bout him I’ll be his Fan 4E’erMore

  25. Paul on October 6th, 2007 4:38 pm

With a voice like his he needs a comeback. Music has just become dire recently and he’s one of the only people that can change that. Ok realisticly no matter how brilliant the album is its never going to be as good as say thriller but i believe he can easily become one of the biggest entertainers in the world again, he just needs a good album, a world tour, a record company that acctuly cares (unlike sony) and he’s rolling lol

  26. Kayser on October 6th, 2007 6:10 pm

i KNOW he will be successful. Just because he hasn’t been an entertainer for about 10 years doesn’t mean he’s lost it, he’s been gettting better. I’m sure he was using those years to create and gather his best work, and now he’s getting ready to show it to the world.

God willing, he will do well, maybe better than Thriller.

  27. Charlie on October 7th, 2007 8:18 pm

Talking about good promotion, a photoshoot of Michael Jackson is featured in the Italian Vogue magasine (and he looks good) and there is strong speculation that he could be appearing on the X-FACTOR as a panelist/mentor. That program is watched by millions and will only portray Michael as someone who demands ultimate respect…. artisted are always full of admiration for him. Younger people will be like, ”Hold on, why is that weird paedophile i always see in the paper commanding so much respect form everyone and why are they all so excited he’s there??”

With any luck they might look into the fact he’s ACTUALLY the most inspirational perfoming/musical legend of the century and the biggest selling artist of all time. In turn,m they may buy his new album!

    Lets hope it happens!!

  28. Brandon on October 7th, 2007 9:31 pm

    CHARLIE - 100% agreement…

Theres a need to present Michael as the artist, not a creature from tabloid presented by some purpose pics, although we all do know that Michael looks beautiful, he hasnt changed for the last 20 years…, he really looks the same….

But…, as a musician he must carry with the old classic sound enwraped into new fresh songs of the 2007/2008… thats all.

I wich he could look like in the era of the 87-89… he looked amazing…, fabulous…

  29. Persios on October 8th, 2007 2:31 am

    The comeback is not important.
He should make a great album, if he can then he go and if he can not, it’s better to do not make any album.

  30. Charlie on October 8th, 2007 2:56 am

He did look very good in that era. 2001 was the worst, something had gone terribly wrong with the surgery, he looked al mousie and had to disguise it in the You Rock My World video with his hat most of the time. However, he’s looking much better now days, back to history era-ish. I think the fact he was concious of his facial appearance marred his performance in the You Rock My World vid too. He was obviously concious enough to have it covered up by his hat and rarely shown (except for the end when he faces Brando and lets face it he looks like a china doll). Now he’s looking better and has a bit of venom in him from the court case and i think he’s fired up. I cant wait.

Say good bye to the soppy Peter Pan, lost children MJ and say hello to Give into Me/2 Bad/Dirty Diana/XScape MJ we all want to see!
Im desperate for him to come and tear up the show at some award cermony sometime soon, bursting out from underneath the stage in a ball of flames, looking angry as fuck with the world and kicking out some mean dance moves with slash on guitar and some bad ass robot. No humming along to ‘We Are the World’ next time….hes got something up his sleeve, I can feel it!

Lets hope, i’d just love to see it. A standing ovation. A repetition of 1995 MTV Music Video Awards Michael please!! Show them who’s the fucking man! You invented these people!!!!

  31. Laurence Rawls on October 8th, 2007 2:53 pm

ANY OTHER ARTIST, in the entire industry that had experienced 1/3rd of what Michael Jackson has gone through with the tasteless jokes, unfair and prejudiced remarks about his looks, unjust media coverage, etc….no other act could have survived at all!!! Today Paris, Britney, everybody’s going to jail and it’s not a big deal….Martha Stewart when to prison and was convicted..no one says anything!!!
Michael was declared innocent on all counts in a very grueling and from the media viewpoint a very lopsided, pre-judged circus!! No one wants to admit that they are racist or prejudiced, but too many comment on the man’s color and looks…..what’s that all about? Many of you need to search your soul, and look at yourself.
Hey stop judging the man, when you clearly do not have the facts!! The man has been exonerated. check out the man, the entertainer, the music
    He’s still got it!
It’s a shame that any entertainer or any person for that matter has had to endure such foul and mean comments and coverage as Mr. Jackson. The haters can say what they will, but there’s no denying his talent.

  32. Sharon on October 8th, 2007 4:56 pm

He will because he still has a hardcore fan base and not only that the public likes his music.

  33. Brandon on October 8th, 2007 7:04 pm

    CHARLIE…. 100 % agreement

  34. Rhonda on October 12th, 2007 3:30 am

to the one named Connely, you said Michael needs to come clean. Clean about what he didn’t do anything. The reason why he decided not to take the stand is because his lawyers felt it wasn’t necessary since they figured they could win the trial despite his testimony. I mean the whole aquittal was basically based on the fact the prosecuters had no substantial evidence to back up the boy’s claims and the fact that they(the plaintiff) lied on the stand several times. And need I say anything about the mother. As for Michael making a comeback well if Britney Spears can do it then yeah you bet your a** Michael can because Britney does not have near the talent that he does. I mean both have had very rocky years in the past and well anything is possible. But I definitely wouldn’t call it a comeback, call it more of a RETURN TO GREATNESS. You have to go somewhere to comeback right and Michael hasn’t gone anywhere. And to quote Michael ‘you haven’t seen nothing yet’.

  35. Jarrad on January 9th, 2008 12:30 pm

depends what constitutes a ‘comeback’. will he sell tens of millions again? i highly doubt it… i doubt he will even outsell invincible. will he have some measure of comercial sucess again? i expect he will in the more forgiving markets in europe and asia.. but in USA and my country (australia) he is but a historical afterthought. people think Michael Jackson they think 80’s-early 90’s, they do not think this decade.. and lets be honest he hasnt exactly set trends this decade as he did the previous. he is nearing 50 now.. thoes Michael fans who were buying his music in there teens and twenties are well past it now in the sense that they probably arent nearly as emersed in the music scene.. he is unlikely to pick up any new fans, so his sales will be limited to a niche market. funnily enough… there would be generation Y’ers who would see a new MJ show and probably think hes immitating justin timberlake. Mike can work with Kanye, 50, Will>i>am and whoever else he wants but in the end he is 50, and he is past his shelf life… id be surprised if he sold 10 million world wide… which isnt a flop in the traditional sense.. but lets face it.. its a dent in his legacy.
