How To: Make Your Own Christmas Stocking

If you’re looking for some festive activities for your children, then what about making your own Christmas stockings? The tradition of the Christmas stocking is favoured from around the world. Traditionally, Santa would put something to represent each of the five senses in the stockings which were hung on the end of a bed or above the fireplace. Imagine your child’s delight as he/she hangs up her own stocking for Santa, this post will tell you what you need and how to make your own Christmas stocking.
To make you original stocking, you will need,
- Scissors
- 2 pieces of red fleece (each 24 x 16 inches)
- 2 pieces of white faux fur (each 24 x 16 inches)
- Long sewing pins
- Large-eye sewing needle
- Red embroidery floss
- White embroidery floss
- Sheet of yellow felt (9×12 inches)
- Yellow embroidery floss
- Fiberfill
- Fabric Paint
- Clear tape
- 9 inches of white twist cord
To Make The Stocking:
1. First, you will need the paper pattern. To download this pattern simply click here. You will need Adobe Reader in order to view the pattern. If you’re feeling creative, you could always draw your own.
2. Once you have your pattern, cut 1 stocking shape from each piece of the red fleece and 1 from each piece of the faux fur. Be sure to cut the fir stockings so that the toes point in opposite directions with the fur sides up.
3. You now need to pin the two stockings together with the fur stockings on the inside, furry sides in, and the red stockings on the outside.
4. Whipstitch around the edge with the red floss to sew the shapes together, leaving the top unsewn.
5. At the top of the stocking, sew together the front 2 edges, then the back 2, with the white embroidery floss.
6. Fold to top down to make the cuff. You now have your stocking!
For the Trimmings
7. Cut two star shapes from the yellow felt.
8. Use the yellow floss to whipstitch around the edges, sewing the stars together. Leave a small section open.
9. Stuff the star with fiberfill and then finish sewing the edges.
10. Using the fabric paint, write your child’s name on the star and sew it to the edge o

11. Tape the ends of the chord to keep them from fraying and then sew the core to the stocking for hanging.
There you have it! One stocking ready for hanging on the fireplace.
