7.4 magnitude earthquake hit near New Zealand

The earthquake happened at 6:24 p.m. local New Zealand time and could be felt as far away as South Island. When the quake first happened there were fears of a possible tsunami, but this is less likely to happen. Many people who felt the quake had said that it did not even feel that strong.
