Lord of the Rings (LOTR) vs Harry Potter: Your Favorite Is?

Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter are two cult classics and both have their legions of fans around the world. Both films are adapted from books and both films have had a monumental amount of success at the box office.

LOTR was written by the amazing J.R.R Tolkien and follows the story of Frodo Baggins, a peaceful hobbit, who is content with living in a distant corner of Middle-Earth. That is until he is faced with a challenge. Frodo must obliterate the Ring of Power to prevent the forces of evil from getting a hold of it.

Harry Potter, although in the same ‘fantasy’ genre is a whole different story. Harry Potter is a wizard who parents were killed when he was young by an evil wizard named Voldemort. Through Harry’s seven years at magic school Hogwarts, he is confronted by many dangers, including the return of Voldemort (who everyone thought was dead). Harry Potter finds he has to deal with growing up, school and most importantly, saving those he loves.

Now I must confess I have seen every Harry Potter movie so far, as well and reading all the books. Lord of the Rings, however, is not my scene at all. I won’t go as far as to say I hate the movies, but I have a strong dislike to them.

Lord of the Rings (LOTR) vs Harry Potter: Your Favorite Is?

In my opinion, Harry Potter is the better film franchise. Lord of the Rings may have its fans but nothing can beat Harry Potter. It’s more accessible to everyone who watches it, whereas LOTR seems to have a set audience. Don’t get me wrong, technically LOTR is an cracking film - the special affects are amazing but I just believe Harry Potter is far better.

That’s just my opinion though, I want to know what you think. Which is your favorite out of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and why?

I love all the Harry Potter films (although the last was not as good as the book, it left many bits out the book had).

But hands down Lord of the Rings is the way better film franchise, Harry potter is for kids.

Lord of the Rings has so much more to it and it was one film set over 3 parts, not like harry potters made up as go alone stuff.

If you have not watched all of Lord of the Rings, then go do it before you comment.

LOTR is easily better than harry potter, but like you said it has a set audience. harry potter movies appeal to pretty much every person and are very good movies, but LOTR appeals to people who like great complexion in movies. Harry potter also has a huge fanbase.

But like i said LOTR all tha way.

I have read all the LoTR books and seen all the movies. I have also read all the Harry Potter books and seen all the movies. Having read the first two comments I would have to say the Daniel is delusional if he thinks Harry Potter is for kids. The sales numbers alone prove that wrong and I truly doubt Daniel has read all the HP books because anyone who has as seen the darkness and increasing adult content of the stories. HP has aged throughout the series and I feel it will stand the test of time, much as the LoTR series has. I think Shady is one of those millions of fans who are simply more into LoTR than HP and there is nothing wrong with that. Some people like Star Trek, others prefer Star Wars. It is impossible to say one series is BETTER than the other. I would also say Shady has not done a very detailed reading of HP because it has a depth and complexity that was never fully understood until the final book in the series was released. In terms of fans I believe both will always have their diehards, but in the end I feel HP will win out as the franchise with the broadest appeal and , I would hope, the longest run. Both series will undoubtedly outlive all of us and, mostly likely, our great, great, great grandchildren and both are truly series for the ages. ALL that said, I am a diehard, obsessed, possibly rabid, HP fan and LoTR can bite my shiny metal…sorry, wrong series.

If you’re talking about films, Lord of the Rings beats Harry Potter, no questions. Harry Potter may be more accessible, but the films have bad acting, bad direction, and less epic scale. The book of Harry Potter is far better than the movies, and it it was a competition of books, Lord of the Rings would still win, but Harry Potter would lose by less.

Kat makes a lot of good points and I agree with most of it. I’ve also read all the books and saw the movies. If I’m to compare just the movies then I would choose LotR as the best. Of the books I would choose HP. I didn’t think the acting was bad in the HP movies. My problem is with the changing directors. The movies change each time the director changes and I think it hurt the movies because of that. I’m sure they are all good directors but they each have a different style and they each have to pick up where the last one left off. Where the LotR movies were all directed by the same person and he is able to build on that in all three movies. My vote: LotR is the better movie but HP is the better book.

I like both and that’s really the bottom line of the matter. Whether I’m watching LOTR or HP, I get the same feeling of being whisked away to some other reality for a fun adventure that I couldn’t experience otherwise. Regardless of which is “better”, they’re both outstanding in my book.

Ive read and seen both a hundred times and I feel lotr is far superior It took tolkien allmost 20 years to write the trilogy and there is an unbelievably HUGE amount of back story, history etc the films took 8 years to make (I know there are more hp films but in ratio of time to film lotr takes longer) this I think proves lotr has far greater depth. Now I like hp also but in terms of depth and sheer effort that went into making the books and films lotr wins and lets not forget return of the king won 12 academy awards, and fellowship and two towers won there share to.

Harry Potter did start being more for kids, but as the saga went on the stories got much darker which makes it great for both children and adults. As for Lord of the Rings, I do prefer the story but hey that is just my opinion. And as for Dan saying that loads was cut out of the last Harry Potter movie, what does he expect, the script writer has to make choices as to what has to be kept in which must be a very hard job indeed.

I can say as an author that lord of the rings is better, books definetly, films in my opinion(and that of any intelligent person) lotr is better. Also this should be about whats better not what you prefer.
