Apple seems to have changed it’s approach regarding their statement warning that iPhone unlocks an render the device useless and have now set their sites on the hackers. It has been reported that an iPod hacker, who calls himself ‘Martyn’, had told of his plans to download ‘every bit of code’ from a broken iPod touch and upload it to a secure area of his site for other touch hackers to share.
Apple had learned of ‘Martyn’s’ plans before his upload had finished and served a takedown notice of his ISP citing copyright law.
You are probably wondering why hackers like Martyn are so interested in hacking the iPod touch. Well, it’s because hacking the iPod may enable them to get third party applications on the device, which is not possible on the closed player.
Apple’s statement about unlocked iPhones has been cited as apple posturing to put off those who were undecided about whether to unlock their phone, or to appease AT&T who are the main injured party if an iPhone gets unlocked.
TUAW has said that “Apple is apparently bending over backwards to do everything they can to keep the iPod touch closed”.
