Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson has pleaded guilty to possessing drugs and driving under the influence.
The 41-year-old made the admission at a court in Arizona and now faces a maximum four year sentence for the two offences. The charges Tyson pleaded guilty to are in connection with an incident late last year and he is scheduled to be sentenced on November 19th.
The former boxing champion was arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona, last December when he was spotted driving erratically after leaving a nightclub and almost colliding with a sheriff’s vehicle. Prosecutors have said that Tyson was in possession of two grams of cocaine and had traces of marijuana in his system at the time of his arrest.
The American boxer admitted to using cocaine that day and having an addiction to the drug. The arresting officer wrote in his report, “Mike admitted to possessing bags of cocaine and said he uses any time he can get his hands on it,”
David Chesnoff, Tyson’s lawyer, has said the boxer is undergoing a stint in rehab in California and has now been sober for eight months.
Unlike most celebrities who face a jail sentence, Tyson knows that he has done wrong. His lawyer said, “He’s not in denial. He’s acknowledged that what he did was wrong.”
