Two Men Hunted For School Nail Bomb

Police have launched a hunt for two men who were seen near Runnymede St Edward’s school in Sandfield Park, West Derby, Liverpool at around 2.50pm yesterday when what is thought to be a home-made nail bomb exploded inside a teacher’s car.

So far Merseyside Police only have a description of one of the men who they said was white, stocky, about 5ft 10in and aged between 40 and 50 with light-coloured hair but they have no description of the second man and are still examining CCTV from outside the school.

Ian Pilling, Superintendent from Merseyside Police has called the crime ‘despicable’ he continued,

“Certainly from what I have seen, anybody in the vicinity of the vehicle could have been injured or killed,”

The silver saloon car was parked just 30ft from the windows of the £4,500-a-year independent school. Nails and shattered glass from the windows of the car were sent flying into the air when the device was detonated.

There were around 300 pupils were still in their classrooms awaiting the end of the school day when the explosion went off. Luckily no one was hurt. The children and staff were kept inside while police checked the car before evacuating them later.

It is not yet known if the teacher who owned the car was being targeted directly.

Mr Pilling said, “At this stage we can’t say if somebody was targeting a teacher; there is nothing indicating why anybody would target this teacher.”

Ian Pilling also urged parents who were collecting their children or members of the public who may have seen anything suspicious to contact officers.
