Halo 3 (Xbox 360) Vs. Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii): Your Thoughts?

By: Daniel Chubb | September 18, 2007 | 53 Comments

Halo 3 Vs. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

So, I’ve heard a lot of debating about Halo 3 for the 360 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii and which one is better; let’s take a quick analysis.

So yeah, I’ve had a lot of talk regarding these two killer apps for each console; or so everyone says. So much so, that I’ve decided to quickly write this outlining my views and where I stand on it.

Halo 3; the killer game which boasts being the most anticipated game for the last couple of years which is due to come out in just a few days time.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl; the third game in the series, highly anticipated by Nintendo fans alike since the GameCube version back years ago.

So what’s better? My opinion; neither. I’m bored of sequels, meaningless sequels in fact. Halo 3, boasts nothing more than plain shooting, chucking grenades, a generic storyline and a multi-player that bares a lot of resemblance to Halo 2. In my previous posts, I’ve mentioned I don’t really have any care for this game. Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Well, the first game was good, the second game was good…but seriously I can’t see how much further they can go with the series. I mean, won’t it just be like the GameCube version but with new characters and new maps? No thanks.

I really think neither are going to be better than each other, on absolutely any level. I’ve had enough of fan-boy talk between the two, and to be frank nobody’s right. They’re both sequels which apparently are meant to be killer apps; I’m not saying they’re not going to be; I’m just stating that I don’t see what’s the fuss about the two…

So what are your takes on this? What game will be better?

    Lol.

    Brawl FTW!!!

Uh, just new characters and maps? Not quite. Unlike the first two games, it has a new, robust single-player mode, new control functions, and just confirmed to use wi-fi. And mark my words: even more will be revealed.

I don’t know enough about Halo, but I agree with you that neither are better than the other. They’re almost completely different kinds of games.

Halo 3 is a great multiplayer experience for co-op and multiplayer. The story is not generic, its great. It also has a very creative forge map editor thats 8 player cooperative and you can invent game modes in it. Brawl is on the Wii. Thats enough reason why it will suck

  • Toni

Why would you want a fighting game thats made for in pubescent little children.

  • Devil Dawg42

This has no clue of what he is talking about the multiplayer for halo 3 is just like halo2 what are you going off of that beta that brought over 800,000 players to it unless your talking about something else your just plane dumb, have you been in a hole have you not herd about forge or the huge variety of weapons and vehicles well I guess you didnt and who ever thinks halo sucks well you people are the ones that suck at halo and wish it was on your console you got. Get over it people Halo 3 is going to be awsome and there is nothing you can do about it.

  • Nat

If SSBB can manage to get headphone/mic support it could be the best game of the year.

“My opinion; neither. I’m bored of sequels, meaningless sequels in fact. Halo 3, boasts nothing more than plain shooting, chucking grenades, a generic storyline and a multi-player that bares a lot of resemblance to Halo 2. ”

Saying nonsense like that is worse then being a complete fanboy. Brawl will be decent, but it is not even in the same level as halo. No game is. The lifespen of Halo 3 will be enormous. Just as Halo 2 has proven. No one plays brawl anymore, and in 6 months after the next one is releases, no one will be playing it again. Give it up there is no Halo killer. Halo kills everything.

My Dad says tv sucks! My mom says cars suck we should just ride a bike!If your opinion on the game that has broken tons of records is “it sucks” than you suck!

  • Jim

Well, SSBM was a great game but there was still plenty of room for improvement. First, the character needs to be balanced out a little better. Some characters are just a little too strong like fox and sheik and some are too weak. The difference becomes more noticable as you become more proficient at the game, and incorporate advance techniques in your vocabulary. Sakurai has stated balancing is a priority for him. New gameplay mechanics are being added, such as the footstool jump, aimable tether recovery and gliding. It now has a seemingly nice and detailed story mode. Online is also a biggie, no one has to play against the noob cpu again when they are not with friends, multiplying replay value by a substantial amount. New characters, new stages, new modes of play, best graphics by far on the wii are all just icing on the cake. I also have no question halo 3 will be another high quality product. Halo 3 will sell more in the US, but Brawl will sell more worldwide.

  • ALex

Umm yea … for those who post on websites please get your facts straight.. Halo has battles with 100+ enemies on screen.. SSB doesent.. Halo has a saved films feautre.. SSB doesent.. Halo has a map editor that you can upload to Bungie.net {also with saved films} and others can download it SSB does not…. so please.. get your facts straight Nintendo fanboys… oh and i tried the very first SSB and that is the only one I will ever play

  • ALex

Lol generic plot… I’m sorry UNDERSTAND the plot before you incriminate it.. and SSB has no plot.. so umm yea…. and please before you piss fanboys off.. dont write biased articles about the two games.. this website has written another article on Halo 3 and it was quite biased mentioning none of the stuff i mentioned in my post before..

  • Mike

Nintendo fanboys: Halo 3 won’t suck.
    Microsoft fanboys: Brawl won’t suck
In general, what I’m saying is: BOTH ARE GONNA KICK ASS!

This has to be one of the most pointless articles I’ve ever read. It offers no view on anything and there aren’t any reasons. While I agree that sequels need to stop and more originals need to be produced, Halo 3 and Brawl both offer more than enough content to distinguish themelves from their older brothers and provide another good gaming experience. Stop wasting internet space with dumb posts. To ALex, comparing Halo features to SSB obviosly won’t match up. It’s like comparing Dora to Resistence. Well, Resistence Fall of Man doesn’t have cute little girls and Dora does. Resistence doesn’t teach you Spanish like Dora does. And, there’s no pink in Resistence! Therefore, Dora is better and I definitely like it better than Resistence Fall of Man.

  • Beaker

SSBB will be way better then halo. SSBB will have a story line in its adventure mode.

Ive played halo, and there good games. But I have just as much fun playing time splitters. SSBB doesnt have the same gameplay as any other game(not counting melee and original). Im sure halo 3 will sell like hot cakes at first, and everyone will say its the best, and it probably will be pretty good. But it won’t be more fun the brawl and in the long run it probably won’t sell more games then brawl.

  • pip

Halo is a cultural phenomenon. It is the Star Wars of this generation. And the story is a science fiction adventure. With Aliens, Human Warfare and a hero.

The story is generic, but when is anything not generic. Any action game or movie must have a premise the allows for total annihalation. Where all genocidal actions of mass destruction and serial massacre is justified.

How original can an ‘action’ game be anymore…Its made as a form of escapist entertainment. It wasnt made to win the Nobel Peace Prize or Pulizer. (Although its merits have been acknowledge by the Science fiction community)

Maybe the author of this article would rather play a political game based on galactic diplomacy where you give speeches, shake hands, debate with opponents and spend the whole game trying to sway galactic opinion your way….

THe author should stop being a pretentious twat, and accept it for what it is. A Game, that just happens to break box office records, sells consoles and makes many many money, has a lead Character that alot of people care about, and a storyline that people want to get to the bottom of….

If the author wants to go off and read War and Peace sipping earl grey english tea from his finest china, whilste smoking a pipe which stinks his walrus moustache, its all good with me….

  • Matt F

I only played halo once, it was hooked up with two other x-boxes and there were alot of us playing, and it was the greatest… disapointment i have ever felt, there was so much hype… it was crap, this was just after playing time spliiters multi which was on all three consoles, which was amazing and far superior, so for multi playing, i don’t care.
SSB AND SSBM were great games, i love the idea of well done characters battling it out, fine you can say it’s just new levels and characters, but “map editor” new levels… it will be the same as halo 1 and 2 just better graghics, in fairness ssb will just be the same game with a few extras. But ssb is my sort of game, i’m a nintendo fan, and halo dosen’t interest me, as a xbox fan will say he likes halo etc.
It dose not matter what anyone on here can say, each person has their own opinion already and will not care what anyone says (unless it backs there own arguement.)

Ugghh.. you need to use Halo and SSB to get hits on you blog? What a looser. Write something worth reading, because to be honest, your gay. Kthnxbye.

  • Phil Harrison

HALO 3 is way better….but ssbb is ok.

  • platomaker

what was this written by a soccer mom?

halo 3 will obviously make better use of networking; maybe 32 players maximum (a freakin’ war) if by any chance that it doesn’t, then at least it still has the halo name in it. Is it the same? heck no. so long as the cheats and glitches are neutralized.

smash bros. brawl already has some new features, the only thing that would make it a real halo killer (besides what was implied above) if it would allow more than 4 players (much like the last game, only always)or have local lan available for multiple systems that aren’t online. and again, so long as the glitches are neutralized, (kill the wave-dashing, automated BS.)

halo w/o glitches= awesome its like a real game. its not as bad so long as you don’t go online or you cheat.

smash bros. like it was 5 years ago= awesome its like a real game, but its not as bad now.

  • Jim

“I’ve had enough of fan-boy talk between the two”

Don’t be such a hypocrite if you’ve truly “had enough of fan-boy talk” then why would you keep consistantly bringing up fanboy topics like these?

No need to answer, it’s a rhetorical question.

  • Trudawg

Just get em both for crying out loud everyone. If you have only a 360 get halo 3, if you only have a Wii get SSBB, and if you have both get em both. Each game has its own unique features and content so try them both to get different experiences. I am amazed how people can argue about games like its politics or something!

  • ssbb

    JIGGLEPUFF FTW!!!! nough’ said

  • dan

i owned halo1 and ssbm and i can see why melee sold more copies. its not only the most fun ive ever had on a game but offers a good grown up fighting game. if you see pikachu and think its just for kiddies, wow are you mising out.
melee was the best sellinggame on cube and outsold halo1, i dont think with the improvments of wifi, more characters and improved single player that halo3 can sell as many copies. more people own a Wii and this will be the reason to buy one (that and starwars).
if you have really owned both and arnt just a 360 fanboy who thinks melee was called brawl or is just for kids then you will realise the true greatness that is super smash bros

  • Matt F

How is jigglepuff meant to be an arguement, actually she has one of the strongest moves in the two previous games. And actually is a good fighter (one of my 5 choices anyway) So, you should re-think that arguement because, well…. it’s pretty lame!

  • someone

    Smash Bros. is WAY better

  • Physicsgeek

Both great games. Nothing alike. Who came up with this article?? Halo 3 vs. Metriod 3 now that is a headline and something to talk about!

  • Matt

I swear a lot of you guys are retards. Like that guy listing 3 things that Halo has that Smash doesn’t, some of which were not true, and I could easily write more things Smash has that Halo doesn’t.
Brawl is going to sell more and be a whole lot more popular everywhere, not just the U.S.
And wavedashing isn’t a glitch, so a lot of you retards need to get your facts straight.

  • Jake

We got a Halo game last year, we havn’t seen a new Smash Bros for alot longer. In this case, I can see Brawl outselling Halo 3, just because the smash bros fans have been waiting for this for a long long time. And with the Wii’s expanding audiance and the Wii sales slowey catching up to the 360, are further proof that Smash bros. has a better chance.

Check out my youtube videos. ObsessedJam on Youtube! :)

“I’ve had enough of fan-boy talk between the two”

So i’ll make it a topic and get even more fan-boy talk between the two…

I’m beginning to lose all the respect i never had for this site.

  • Taylor J.

I believe the two games can’t be compared because they are both representing completely different genres. The only common aspect is that they both have multiplayer. On to the thought of which one is better, I personally am more excited for brawl because my friends have played the halo 3 beta and they have all told me it is just a glorified version of halo2 multiplayer (more weapons, items, vehicles, etc.) so the only thing that excites me about the upcoming halo3 is the conclusion to the storyline.

Brawl on the otherhand has not just glorified the last game, but they have decided to add some interesting concepts such as final smash, temporary combat assistants and they are actually creating a story line for the single player so I most likely am biased towards nintendo, but i have played games on a constant basis for about 14 years, so i’m not waivering on my thoughts on brawl being more exciting.

  • Taylor J.

Also, recently the ssmb developers announced online play will be available for the game just that everyone knows.

  • Taylor J.

Also also, for the people on here who say either halo 3 stinks or ssmb stinks and give no reason, why bother commenting.

The fact of the matter is that both games are amazing representations of their genres and the reason why i perfer ssmb is basically the fact that my favorite and most likely y’alls favorite characters(whether you admit it or not) are duking it out against each other in several outrageous ways so the possibilities for appeal and innovation for this game i think is utterly limitless.

P.S. I apoligize for my bad grammar on comments :(

  • Taylor J.

one last remark(maybe) if you don’t much about super smash bros brawl, google the word and link that says super smash bros dojo on it click on it and it is the best for info on the game so before you make conclusions make sure you know the aspects of the game.

  • platomaker

wave dashing is an act. the effect of it is a glitch. case in point samus’s super wave dash performed with a bomb. that’s enough proof.

    halo’s alright.

  • http://Google Dark Hero

    You guy all are stupid!
    Halo 3 will kick ASS.
    SSBB is ok.

  • http://Google Dark Hero

    HALO 3 RULZ

  • Cameron

    MASTERCHIEF DIES IN HALO 3!!!!!!

    spoiled the ending.

  • Jason Hagle

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait.

People are arguing about Halo 3 and SSBB? I never even thought to compare the two. I expect both to be great.

Halo 3 is much more anticipated than Brawl, and I recognize that it will sell a lot more in the U.S. than Brawl will. I don’t have an Xbox 360, but I do have Halo and Halo 2 for my PC. I don’t play them often; definitely not as much as my friends do. When I’m playing with friends I have a lot of fun playing Halo. But overall, it’s not quite the perfect-fitting game for me. Shooters are just not my strong suit as far as video games go, and I expect to have a lot more fun with Brawl.

I’ve been really excited for Brawl over the past few months, watching the updates on the Smash Bros. website. I’ve always loved the Smash Bros. series and I get lasting fun from them, which I don’t get from Halo. I’ll be able to play it freely, since I do own a Wii console, and I love all of the improvements made since the last game, subtle as they are.

The big new option, online play, features my main complaint: Nintendo has a TERRIBLE online service. Friend codes… Why? This is where I give huge props to Microsoft; They know how to do online games. I prefer community settings to blind Expert vs Noob, Me vs Professional, Impatient vs Bad Connection, just plain random and terrible hook-ups. I can expect to play against my friends, but I would like to be able to communicate with and familiarize myself with who I’m playing against. Maybe I’ll want to fight them again at a later time?

Despite the poorness of Smash’s online features, which I didn’t really even expect in the first place, I do think I’ll get more enjoyment out of Super Smash Bros. Brawl than Halo 3.

But really, how can you even try to compare to totally different games like Halo 3 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl? They’re two totally separate games in separate genres, made for different consoles and for separate audiences. What else can you say?

  • John

You’re entitled to your opinion. The millions who will purchase these products are entitled to theirs.

  • http://Google Dark Hero

Halo on the computer is gay!
You will get you @$$ kicked if you play with the Xbox 360.

  • Jason Hagle

    I’m aware of that..

  • Hmmm

Really, man(or woman)… if you don’t want “fanboy” arguments, then why post this then say both are boring? that’s pointless.

I think SSBB will sell more, whether or not it is better. Wii has a bigger base now.

The actual debate is whether or not you like first person shooter games or fighting(as in SSB and SSBM fighting-soulcalibur-like) games. I think that this is rather stupid to compare.

I have a wii, so im getting Brawl. No matter what. While i am excited for Halo 3, i wont be picking up a Xbox 360 with it’s defects just for that game. i’ll wait for the computer version.

  • Josh

I honestly think that it all depends on the person.

Everyone has their own opinions about each game.

One person could like Halo 3 more and another could enjoy playing Brawl more.

It doesn’t matter on how the graphics are, the gameplay, etc.

I mean sure, all those mentioned above are all important, but it doesn’t prove which game would be better.

Halo 3 has it’s pros and cons and so does Brawl.

If we really sit down and think about it, it all depends on the indivduals point of view and thoughts on the game.

For instance, I would enjoy Brawl more because I am more into that type of game ever since the first game was released.

I always have been, and always will be.

I also like Halo 3. I like the whole Halo series infact.

But I am not that much of a fan of the game like I am with Brawl.

Again, that is just my opinion.

People should just respect each and every persons own and individual opinions on each game.

So in conclusion, no game is better than the other, it all depends on how you look at each game and which on that you prefer.

  • platomaker

which is better? well relativism ain’t going to solve anything , so as far as anyone’s opinion is concerned: great but as far as which is better, halo 3 or smash brawl. lets just see what happens. halo 3 so far is a great game, i rather not take reviews too literally but it really is a good game, mechanics-everything. i don’t own an xbox, but the game inspires plenty of action.

smash brawl. hey i already KNOW this is going to happen:

8 players, already hinted since it uses ALL controllers types; its not just for comfort its for a 4-on-4.
    sonic was already confirmed
knuckles will be another newcomer, complete with the new glide action.
dixie kong addition with glide action.
    probably lucas’s evil twin brother.
high scores online for classic 1-P mode.
2 more newcomers will be announced before the game is released.
i wouldn’t be surprised to see another trainer “Blue” with his better pokemon.

its predictable and yet there is much more to it. but….lets just see what happens.

  • ggtgg

actally wavedashing is a glitch, it wont be in brawl. Second, halo 3 is no better than the first halo. Smash is much more fun. Halo is for computer nerds

  • matt

I heard from a friend the other day who said he compelted halo 3 in 8 hours… not good really!

  • Aaron

hes wrong about one thing i know that then new smash games has more than enogh new features and i dont have halo 3 but have played it and its fun as h@!!

  • Mark

” Halo has a map editor that you can upload to Bungie.net {also with saved films} and others can download it SSB does not…. ” says alex

well… hmmm… how can i put this. your wrong? yeah that sounds about right. if you would kindly go to the proper website it will inform you that SSBB does have a map biulder and that you can share those maps with other nintendo players. so, before you make newbish remarks, remember that you are stupid. thank you.

oh and to all those other tards who don’t like SSBB, you should try checking the offical site every once and a while, just for kicks. there are new updates daily that completely thrash your expectations. AWESOME!

  • Andrew

I LOVE HALO! But I also like SSBB. Although the writer of this article is a dumbarse; he still has a good point. Neither game is better that the other. But I’m pretty sure HALO will sell better.

  • Brian

SSBB will be the best game ever lol.
I like both games but halo gets boring after awhile
so yeah SSBB is going to to kick halo 3s ass
so i hope, but delaying one tim after another i beginning to be bul$#%t i been waiting like a year now. I hope they don’t delay any more.
The game is going to be sweet though.
    later lol
