German authorities have announced that the Tom Cruise drama Valkyrie will be allowed to film in the building where the conspirators were executed. The film, about a plot to assassinate Hitler, hasn’t always been so well received in Germany.
The government had previously blocked permission to shoot at the Bendlerblock, which houses a shrine dedicated to plot leader Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, who led an unsuccessful attempt to kill the Fuhrer in July 1944.
Protective officials finally gave in after a wave of protest from journalists and filmmakers who argued that von Stauffenberg’s story deserved to reach a global audience.
A spokesman for the government said,
“We will take a closer look with director Bryan Singer at the location and, while ensuring that the dignity of the shrine is protected, see what’s possible and what’s not.”
The film, titled Valkyrie after the codename used by conspirators, is being lined up for a 2008 release.
