If you’re looking something a little more substantial than the movies delivered this summer, then you’re on the same wavelength as Steven Zaillian. He’s signed on to direct A Thousand Splendid Suns, based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini.
The novel is the follow up to The Kite Runner, the Afghan-set story, and is about two Muslim women of different generations who are married to the same man. They form a friendship that lasts ten years, through the war in Afghanistan and other upheavals.
Producer Scott Rudin had bought the rights to the book, which was a number one bestseller, and Columbia plans to make the film for a very modest $15 million!
Zaillian is the brains behind Gangs of New York and the upcoming American Gangster. He also wrote and directed All The King’s Men, so he’s no stranger to a films with a political subtext.
There hasn’t yet been an announcement on a start date for production but with the strike looming, it’s bound to be soon.
