ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Review: A Sluggish Card Compared To Others

When the X1950 Pro was released last year, I was a bit reluctant to try it out due to other cards on the market such as the 7950GT. And my fears were right.
The X1950 is a gaming card, no question about it; and it beats some Nvidia GPU’s on games such as Oblivion, and when matched with 3dmark, it beats Nvidia too. But really, that doesn’t matter. Nvidia cards beat this in Half-Life 2 and Quake 4 and other games too. In terms of FPS, this does beat lower range 7-series cards, but still the 7950GT beats it in.
Likewise in all of my reviews, I usually compare cards with their value for money. The X1950 is a great card, but seriously if you’re going to buy this today, it would be worth considering buying something that out-rivals it such as the 7950GT, or just save for a few more weeks/months and buy a high 8-series card like the 8800GT.
Similarly, the X1950′s retail price is actually steeper than ATI’s recommended price, so you’ll find yourself actually paying more than its worth anyway; again, linking back to my last point, at this price you could put your money towards a different card.
To summarise, the X1950 is a great card in its own rite, and can shove out brilliant performance in games such as Oblivion with blistering resolutions, but when you compare it to other cards it doesn’t seem so good.
