America’s favourite family that they wouldn’t want to mess with, ‘The Sopranos’, is hot favourite to demolish the competition at Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards. The series is also set to take a place in the record books of U.S television’s top honours in the process.
The acclaimed gangster drama, which ended it’s six-season HBO run in June with a puzzling blackout, is facing tough competition from those unlucky doctors of ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in the race for the prestigious title of Best Drama.
This year’s Emmys are definitely filled with intrigue.
The best-comedy battle is being named as a three-way contest between last year’s winner, ‘The Office’, narrowly favoured over fellow NBC contender ‘30 Rock’ and the new ABC smash hit ‘Ugly Betty’
HBO’s made-for-TV movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” has the most Emmy nominations this year with 17 nominations, and is expected to dominate its category.
Former U.S Vice President Al Gore is up for an award after winning Oscar fame for his 2006 climate-change documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. The onetime Democratic presidential nominee may grab the Emmy limelight if his cable venture, ‘Current TV’ receives the ‘Interactive Television Services’ award.
The US’s most-watched show, American Idol, is favoured to win the prize for reality show contest (finally) over perennial CBS show ‘Amazing Race’.
The Sopranos still remain the centre of attention after the massive media hype, fuelled by its fill-in-the-blank conclusion which left viewers wondering: Did Tony get whacked?
The Sopranos have been so popular, that Emmy producers have planned a farewell tribute to the fictional mob family by the cast of the Broadway hit musical ‘Jersey Boys’.
The Sopranos have received 15 Emmy nominations in total, which is the most of any series this year, and the nominations include a bid for best drama. If The Sopranos can win the best drama award over it’s rivals ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Boston Legal’, ‘Heroes’, and ‘House’, then it will mark the first time a regular U.S drama series has won the top Emmy prize for it’s final season.
