By: Lucy | September 13, 2007
One robber has been shot dead and another injured as they attempted an armed robbery at a Hampshire bank. The incident happened as the pair attempted to rob a security van which was parked outside an HSBC branch in Chandlers Ford.
A spokesman for the bank has confirmed that no customers or staff were hurt in the robbery. He also said, “We are obviously very grateful because this violent incident appears to have had the potential to have been much worse,”
A spokesman for the police had said that the Hampshire Police had been involved in a joint operation with the Met Police Flying Squad at the bank.
The community have understandably been shaken to the core by this incident, especially Melanie Chase, who lives directly above the bank. Speaking about her order, she said, “I was in the bath when I heard someone shouting ‘Get down, Get down’ and then I heard three shots. I looked out the window and saw blood everywhere on the floor. It was horrible.”
Lynn Ward is an estate agent and works at the Alexander Keen estate agents which is next door to the bank, the scene of the armed robbery. She said, “I heard a loud bang ring out and initially thought it must be a traffic accident. But when I looked out of the window I saw a security van and two people on the floor with armed police stood over them. It was chaos and there was lots of shouting and screaming.”
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has released a statement confirming that investigators are to attend the scene of the crime.
