No Genuine Friends on MySpace, Facebook and Bebo

MySpace, Facebook and Bebo
Social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Bebo will not get you any genuine, close friends.

Well that is what the Guardian is reporting about these popular communities, they have got their information from a survey by Dr Will Reader at Sheffield Hallam University.

Social networking will get you hundreds of “acquaintances”, but the study has found that these do not become real world close friends.

Do you agree with this? I can understand this as a majority, but I am sure there are many stories of close friends being made via MySpace, Facebook and Bebo…tell us your story.

Dr Will Reader went on to say “Although the numbers of friends people have on these sites can be massive, the actual number of close friends is approximately the same in the face to face real world”.

The survey was only including 200 people, which I find hard to believe this can give a real conclusion as there are millions of people on these sites and different areas of the world may have different habits.

I completely agree with Dr Will Reader. I am a facebook fanatic since it was introduced in UK and i have not made any new friend.
I have many acquintances but my “top Friends” are friends i have known for yrs. Besides how can you be a close friend to someone you haven’t seen?

MySpace helped me get a lot closer to the girl who became my girlfriend so I disagree entirely.

I’ve made some new friends via myspace, and I’m surprised by how close we have gotten. While I am a southerner, my 3 best friends live in Buffalo, Chicago, and St Paul. Not a day passes that I don’t check on them, and hope things are going well in their lives. These cyber relationships are new to me, but so far, they are growing, just like “real” life ones do. Someday I would love to meet up with at least these three, maybe more, and I think it would go well! You can identify “like” spirits, even on a computer, after some interaction. I’m having SO much fun!!

Totally untrue. I’ve become very close to friends I met on MySpace. When I relocated to London I used MySpace to find a roommate and a job.
