Xbox 360 Elite Rival: $400 40GB PS3 Coming This Christmas?

According to a reliable mole who apparently has a “great track record”, the 80GB model may be taking the price point of the current 60GB model at $499 once all the stocks have been juiced out, which should be very soon indeed. Not only this, but the 80gb price reduction would also allow a 40GB console to be born, costing $399.

The price cuts aren’t the only good news with the new packages reported to be coming with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray, which is hardly surprising seeing as Sony had been throwing Spiderman 2 in with the PSP value pack for years.

In the UK the 40GB model is said to be around about £350, which funnily enough, would make it a much closer rival to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Elite console, a crucial move.

Finally, the PlayStation 2 will receive a further price drop, bringing it down to the bargain price of $99. Now if you ask me, at the moment the PS2 looks like it has a better selection of games than the PS3, so this will ensure Sony that the cheaper console will continue to sell well.

Do Microsoft have a reason to be worried?

Which do you prefer? The Xbox 360 Elite? Or the Sony PlayStation 3?

Let us know how you think the changes could affect the market.

“Now if you ask me, at the moment the PS2 looks like it has a better selection of games than the PS3″

The PS2 has a better selection of games than any console ever made. It has more games than any other console, period.

Still £50 more + the price of an hdmi lead, - the the price of wifi if you use it, 80gig less HD space but I guess if you want Blu-ray and don’t mind fewer games to play then it’s pretty good value, personally i have a wired router, don’t need Blu-ray and will pick up a 360 premium + Bioshock and Halo 3 this month.
I think both systems are good value depending on what your preferences are but for my money 360 has the games.

Well, I have a xbox 360 and I really like it so no contest in my mind. But if you truly want that high def expierance, you may want the PS3 (!!Blue Ray!!). Also if you like competitoin you may want 360 because of the gamer score and !!!XBOX LIVE!!! Any way, if you know what you want, go get it we need more poeple playing games with depth intead of cool controllers,

Also, the difference in HD between the composite and HDMI is 720p / 1080i (composites highest) and 1920i * 1080p (HDMI) HDMI is much better

Premiums now come with the HDMI ports, so look at your box (it will have a cool sticker that says HDMI) if you buy a premium 360 ($349.99 USD), but the Elite ($449.99 USD) is garanteed to be HDMI equipped.

im not biased as im a nintendo fanboy, but the ps3 to me is far more enticing at a similar price point than the 360 elite.
reasons being i like it has built in wifi, id never use/need 120gb hdd, it has the ability to play the biggest game library (ps2), reliable, free internet, HOME, not just FPS, and it just looks sleeker. admittedly halo3 and bioshock are cool but the 360 has never had the variety in games i crave and for all the good things i hear about the size of its gaming library theres really not that many AAA titles and the ones that are are all racing/FPS type games. having said that its better than the ps3’s state of affairs but the ps3 is just cooler.
Also come on microsoft wheres the innovation

  5. DaSauce on September 13th, 2007 2:25 am

    Look.
Most of us will own a PC, a Wii and a 360. That’s just the way it is until the price comes down–and the more features they pull (hardware support for PS1 and PS2) the more they shoot themselves in the foot.
Look at Lair. Heaven? COD4 that looks like COD2 with modern weapons? They haven’t got the software chops.
Their only prayers this fall are TimeShift (with it’s apparent killer Single Player and MULTIPLAYER) and Ratchet and Clank for the diehard fan who has to have that game. And truthfully, as much as we all feel good about Ted at Insomniac–his last Ratchet game was a rip (arenas from three) and Resistance was a lesson in how not to make a launch title brown and boring.
Wii=Mario, Smash Bros, 360 gives us a wealth of options–as much as it pains me to see them continue to ship their decrepit dry mount and overall quality until they get the size and the heat down on their innards.

Well, I have both an XBOX 360 Elite and a PS/3. Both are nice boxes. But until the PS/3 has some decent games (and they must run at a decent framerate) there is no reason to buy one. I have played RFOM completely through like 4 or 5 times now - excellent game. FEAR (one of my favorite games) sucks on it compared to the 360 or PC versions. Motorstorm — very pretty, plays well. Couple other racing games are good. But there just isn’t anything else to do with it. I have both the BlueRay (obviously) and the add-on HD-DVD for the 360. While I don’t buy many of either ($25-30 for a movie is ridiculous when DVD’s are half of that), I tend to buy the HD-DVD versions when I do (usually cheaper and always have more features).
Overall, I am glad I have one — especially the one with the Emotion chip. But honestly, it was not a good investment, at least not yet… maybe 2008 will be the year. At any rate, with soooo many 360 games coming out this holiday season, it will take something spectacular to get me to buy for the PS/3. I am honestly a little disappointed. It is such a nice looking box. If it were not for the “Folding at Home” app, it would just sit there most of the time in the off mode. I can’t even imaging the flack 360 would get if the situation was reversed…

  7. Rorkimaru on September 13th, 2007 5:57 am

Ever since i bought my ps3 my xbox 360 has lain dormant under my tv. IMO the ps3 has better selection of games. this may seem a ridiculous statement but take into account that i dont like shooters and my reason may apear clearer.

when people talk about 360 games they shout “halo” “Gears” “bioshock”. i say so what. by christmass the PS3 will have Resistance (for the shooter fans) Folklore (a genious RPG with great gameplay), Warhawk, home, Lair (since the update i have heard nothing but good), Heavenly Sword along with more downloadable games.

The ps3 is an all round console where the 360 is a FPS magnet. Most titles which are not FPS games are multiplatform (ps3 cant use them then neither can xbox) although i would prefer more games to be multiformat so more people can enjoy it.

I by far consider the ps3 the console of the future. it is stylish and sleek while being whisper quiet without any large external power adaptors. the only one of the three not to. the ps3 is a better built machine and will spend its lifetime improving as the ps2 did.

by inovating developers are given more power, they just need to learn how to use it

  8. Mick on September 13th, 2007 7:05 am

    @Rorkimaru

Nice try Rorkimaru but everybody can tell your just another sad Sony fanboy pretending to own both machines just to try and give your views some credence. Fanboys like you are so sad and pathetic, if you were getting paid by Sony at least you’d be doing a job but no, you’re just the kind of pathetic loser that has nothing better to do. This goes for xbox fanboys that make up crap too.
If none of you fanboys have anything honest to say do then don’t bother saying anything at all.
Rorkimaru you’re a terrible liar, if i were to play you at poker you’d lose your shirt.

Ugh! I am getting so BORED of the PS3 fanboys vs Xbox 360 fanboys arguments EVERYWHERE on the web. This thread was looking pretty reasonable, until Mick stepped in and started the whole cliche going again.

It was refreshing to read Daniel’s comments - neutral and honest and focusing on the fact that its great that these consoles are attracting more people to gaming. The more people we have gaming, the more money for games development. And the more money for games development, the better the games are gonna be for us all.

I personally used to be a Playstation 2 die-hard all the way, and always imagined myself buying the PS3. However, I believe that Sony have overestimated themselves with the price point. At this point I have neither console, but as it stands, I will have an Xbox 360 by Christmas. Even with the rumoured PS3 price drop (I am in Europe), it would STILL be too expensive to justify buying it over the 360. With premium games on both consoles so expensive as it is, it just makes no sense to shell out obscene amounts of cash for the console as well (unless, of course, you are also in the market for a BlueRay player).

The fact of the matter is, if you are a true PS fanboy, you will buy the PS3. However, it is hard to argue with the fact that the Xbox 360 is one hell of a proposition right now.

  10. Jason on September 13th, 2007 10:49 am

You say the Premiums sometimes come with HDMI now? That must suck I thought one of the main reasons you would want the elite is the HDMI, I certainly wouldnt buy it for being black and more HDD.

The premium is a really good price and console but if you own a high-end pc I think x360s are a bit redundant? All the best games go to pc off the 360 anyway (gears, lost planet, bioshock, no doubt halo 3 will eventually) and pc has xbox live too. [sorry for going off topic there]

Personally I’m a sony fan but I can see the appeals of both consoles

  11. Rorkimaru on September 13th, 2007 3:58 pm

@ Mick actualy i do own both consoles but yes i am a fanboy. i never deny it. i am a fanboy but i won the xbox 360 im a raffle at my supermarket. believe me or dont but i do own both consoles and even if my vision is clouded by my fanboy status i am unchanged. i much prefer the ps3 and havent touched the 360 since i bought it.

My 360 is quite old (before the ps3 launch) and it is not one of the newer models with better cooling and HDMI. that said i dont have a hd tv so HDMI isnt much use to me at the moment for either console.

I have seven titles comming to ps3 that i want (some are multi platform such as devil may cry 4) the only game i realy want on the 360 is Tenchu Z and that got bad reviews

Shaun im sorry this thread tuned to fanboy arguments but if called a lier i will defend myself.

Perhaps Mick you are the one who’s shirt isn’t quite as safe as once thought

  12. jaime on September 13th, 2007 4:12 pm

    @Mick
so a fanboy is more pathetic than a owned troll who their job is making FUD, PR terrorism, tell lies, biased stories, biased comments, etc… so he can eat.
so cool job… they must scream it out in family reunions.

at least a fanboy speak from himself and with the heart.
a troll is just a pathetic person with a pathetic job that consist of write passed scripts or support ideas and products.

You can see a stupid troll a mile away…

    a) They always use the word “we” or “our” to exprese ideas. (like “technology WE dont need”)
    b) Or by the use of line scripts of enfatised biased ideas. (like “give us the option and dont forze to us unproven techonology”)
    c) The use of propaganda in comments and list of games so they can create hype (like “xbox live is the best online service”, “Gears,Halo,Bioshock, etc ARE MUST HAVE TITLES for a xbox owner”)
    d) Always talk bad of enemy fanboys, or praise other trolls (like “I AGREE with you someXtroll” who may be their launch budy in the troll department)
    e) Always backup their comments with other owned troll site (wich could be to propagate a rumour, over talk all over the web some fact, or just gain “credibility”)

There you go… you can see a troll a mile away if you see the little details.
As when you see the TV, and i think more often online, DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON INTERNET.
By the way Microsoft is the company that pay more for trolls than any company in the world, and thats a fact, you can see any financial report from microsoft.
When i read troll stories or comments like this…
“Halo fans will forget hardware problems when halo 3 arrive”
“halo fans dont bored by hardware failures”
“i already sent 3 xbox to microsoft, im happy with their support”
“all consoles have hardware problems not just the xbox 360″
“you havent played (xbox game that released this month) you must buy it and try it, its the best xbox 360 game” (and that comment i see every month when axbox game is released)
i just lol, but the comment that make soda out of my noise evry time is
“Microsoft didnt forze to us UNPROVED technology (mostly about blu-ray)”
maybe if microsoft really dont FORZE us UNPROVED technology, the xbox 360 wont break on every user.

  13. Mick on September 13th, 2007 4:14 pm

    @Shaun

“Ugh! I am getting so BORED of the PS3 fanboys vs Xbox 360 fanboys arguments EVERYWHERE on the web”

Yer me too, It’s good to read peoples opions be they pro Sony, pro MS or pro Wii but what i object to is when these guys start fabricating stories where they own more than one console just so they can rip on the others without being accused of bias. Some people have more than one console and prefer one over the other and that’s fine but it’s easy to spot BS most of the time.

And for the record i thought this thread was looking pretty reasonable until Rorkimaru waded in with his make believe scenario.

I have yet to buy a console this generation and come to these forums to help me choose so it is very unhelpful to me when i see comments that are clearly dishonest, so attack me if you want but all i want is honest opinions from REAL console owners to help me choose, if i could afford all three i’d buy them all.

  14. Mick on September 14th, 2007 12:58 am

    @jaime

“so a fanboy is more pathetic than a owned troll who their job is making FUD, PR terrorism, tell lies, biased stories, biased comments, etc… so he can eat.”

No but a fanboy who is making FUD, PR terrorism, tell lies, biased stories, biased comments, etc… for free IS.

They are both losers but who’s more pathetic those that do it to put food on the table or those that do it because they want to?

“By the way Microsoft is the company that pay more for trolls than any company in the world, and thats a fact, you can see any financial report from microsoft.”

You know i’ve seen both sets of fans claim the other uses paid shills but i don’t remember reading any financial reports that list troll wages, if you want to say it’s a fact that Microsoft pay more for trolling you should name you sources.

I know that threespeech self promote Sony by reviewing their own games, Sony ran a bogus PSP viral ad and i’ve heard that Major Nelson trolls for MS but i’ve not read his blogs yet.

Now if people stuck to commenting on the console\s they own instead of ripping on the ones they don’t forums would be all the better for it.

  15. iain777uk on September 16th, 2007 12:09 pm

i bought a ps3 60gb model 2 weeks after release. i have never owned a xbox 360 until the other week when i bought the elite model. i prefer the ps3 but play the xbox a lot more as most of mates have xbox’s which i guess says it all really. the xbox £300 + wifi adaptor £60. which is not far off what payed (£425) for the ps3 with blu-ray + wi-fi. graphics are both very similar at the moment.the ps3 does have a real feel of quality about it. and you can use a normal usb keyboard and allmost any bluetooth head set. and install linux on it. i guess it all aout the games and the cost of the games and seeing as the xbox has been out longer this battle may already be over

  16. brandon18889 on September 19th, 2007 2:19 am

guys… I am really getting tierd of all the OMG PS# IS SOO BETTER……………………………cuz its not its all about the games and game systems should be bought of games not blu-ray or all this crap…..xbox 360 won…. thats common sence

  17. Rorkimaru on September 19th, 2007 4:55 pm

@ Mick: Fine Mick, refuse to believe i own both consoles. i really don’t care. Like i said i prefer the game selection on the PS3. Halo3 is the flagship game of the moment, fine. its not to my taste. i don’t like shooters. the only one i have finished is Half Life.

You Clearly like the 360, so i assume that is the console you will buy. I do have one but i don’t play it. i know you don’t believe me but try to remember i don’t like shooters. you can be happy with your 360, ill be happy with my ps3. maby some day you will get a PS3 through a weird twist of fate and not play it, then you might believe me.

if you want advice that is un-bias here it is:

-if exclucivity is your major intrest the 360 wins.

-if money is the deciding factor buy a 360 but keep in mind you will have to pay a subscription for the online play. that said the Xbox online is better than the ps3 online as a result.

-Rumble or tilt you decide (though its believed the ps3 will have both come TGS07, go fig)

-If you are a big fan of shooters then the Xbox is the way to go. on most other game types both preform equally though many say the ps3 has better racers, which may be hearsay

-If you are interested in HD movies the PS3 is the cheaper option.

-If you want a media hub my recomendation is the ps3 for its superior sound processing but others testify the 360 is also adept.

-if you have no PC (how are you reading this!?) then the PS3 comes with an internet browser and can run linux

-If you have been following staple series of one or the other such as tekken (PS3) or halo (Xbox) then you need said console to continue suport.

-If apearance matters most to you then you must look at your home setup, if you have a 42inch black glossy Bravia TV then the dark shine of the PS3 will match but if you have a silver or white TV in a bright airy room the 360 works best, and remember the 360 can interchange faceplates for different looks, the ps3 cant.

-if you own a PSP then the PS3 adds value to that console with classic game downloads and wireless streaming of media and selected games (only Lair as of yet) over the internet.

-if you like second life but find it overly pornographic the cleaner Home service for ps3 will attract you, if you just want to play the faster xbox live service is more suited to you.

thats all i can think of right now, it is based on my experiance with both consoles. take it or leave it but its honest advice and i think i made a fairly balanced argument for each console.

REMEMBER!!! the most important thing is they are games, play them and enjoy them. it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks!

  18. scotty on September 24th, 2007 7:13 am

i’m tired of hearing that all the 360 have is fps when the truth is that only 16% of the games on the 360 are shooter and that’s almost 300 games,so people need to checkup on their information before they post crap on here that they no nothin about, all they do is post crap that they heard before but the truth is that the 360 has a wide selection of games.
I’ve read some post on this site where sony fanboy claim that he has both systems but his 360 just sit there and all he play is the ps3 because it has a better selection of games then the 360,well the truth is that he might just play his ps3,but he can’t say with a straight face that the ps3 has a better selection of games, the truth is that everybody is complaining about the ps3 not having games, the only ones not complaining is people like this guy who’s a sony fanboy and will make any excuse he can so the ps3 looks better then the 360 wich i think is just childish,i will never say something is better just because i’m a fan on the system or i have one because it’s just stupid, but the fact is that the ps3 can’t even be compared to the lineup of games the 360 have because it’s not even a contest, all people have to do is look at the games that’s out on both system to see that the 360 is the better choice for games then the ps3.he mention that lair and warhawk, but lair got some of the worst reviews i’ve ever seen even the game programer apologize for the game, the only ones saying thatit’s good is sonyfanboys.
i’ve read anoth post on here where one sony fanboy was so call complaining about trolls, but mostly the 360,but after you read his first sentence you could tell that he’s just the biggest troll on the net,all he did was complained about the 360 and how bad it is,and he has the nerve to talk about trolls when like i’ve said he’s the biggest one that i’ve ever seen.now this is what i can’t stand,a hipacritthat complain about something but at the same time he’s doing the same thing that he’s complaing about.the sony fanboys alweays talk about how the 360 fanboys are alway lieing and getting paid by microsoft to say good stuff about the 360 when the truth is that noone is getting paid, just because someone wrote a good article about the 360 and not the ps3.the ps3 fan boys need to remember that the ps3 isn’t god and it has problems just like the 360,as a matter of fact the ps3 has bigger problems right now then the 360 and that’a a fact.
unlike these guys that posted the crap that i’m talking about,i’ll admit when something is good.i think that the 360 and ps3 are both good systems, and the ps3 isn’t that much more powerful then the 360.as a matter of fact the majority of game programers said that they are really equal in pure power because of the way that they are made and the ps3 might be a little more powerful but it’s so little that people want beable to tell the difference.the only people that claims the ps3 is a lot more powerful is sony and people that has a lot of money invested in it,and the ps3 trolls that are brain washed by sony.like i said they are both good systems but as of right now the ps3 can’t touch the 360 for a gaming system,if you want a br player instead of a gaming system then get the ps3 but if you want a gaming system get the 360,because as of right now the ps3 can’t even come close to the 360 in the game department but latter on things might change but as for right now the ps3 can’;t comw close to the 360

  19. Rorkimaru on September 24th, 2007 5:34 pm

@ Scotty; “as a matter of fact the ps3 has bigger problems right now then the 360 and that’a a fact” Id like some sources on this. im not saying you are wrong, i’m just saying i havent heard of them. could you give some examples (im genuinely interested)

What I mean by the 360 only having FPS fames is that the only really popular games for it are FPS games.

I’m not an idiot, i know there are platformers such as Lara Croft: tomb raider and RPG games like Kameo and Blue Dragon. the thing is they arent very good.

I have legend on ps2 and played the Demo on my 360. they are the same game with better graphics on the 360. IMO the tomb raider controls sucked on both systems but thats just because i liked the old tomb raider games, besides legend was too short and anniversary was buggy as hell (might be sorted for 360 version but knowing eidos it wont) besides that they were both far too short. (one level of the remake that took half an hour to run through on ps1 was a single 2 min room on ps2!)

As for Kameo and blue dragon, BD got poor reviews and i hated the demo of Kamio.

That said some of the cheaper games (such as the Prince of Persia remake) are great. PoP was one of the best remakes i ever played (up there with the Resident evil remake on the cube).

In my eyes the PS3 is better but yes i am a huge sony fanboy, I own all the Playstations (eccept psx which was a crappy ps2 mash up).

The truth is (with a few exceptions, Halo/MGS4) the best games are the non exclusive multiformat games. but as i said in my first post they cant be used to talk up a console.

  20. D on October 12th, 2007 5:59 am

you watch ps3 rule in 2008 Killzone + cheaper price of ps3 + Dualshock 3 = dead for xbox 360 and your stupid RROD!

  21. Rorkimaru on October 12th, 2007 12:31 pm

The PS3 is a great console. by far my favourite but it will never kill the 360. personally i think it will overtake the 360 but that is opinion. either way the 360 isnt going to “die” it will be around for the next 5 years at least

  22. aly_baba on October 12th, 2007 3:32 pm

actually all around the ps3 is just more of a stable piece of machinery than an xbox. the only leg up xbox has is the fact that their internet connection is a bit more stable than ps3, but everything else just cant be conpared. Sure, some may feel xbox has a better selection of games but stability is the most important thing from a parental point of view. Who wants to go out and spend all this money for repairs and be put out of their way with recalls when they could just by a monster machine with hardly any flaws and NO recalls? just a thought…

  23. redeyejedi on December 30th, 2007 7:52 pm

i had a 360 elite but 4 for me the ps3 is the better machine i never used 120 gb and if i wanted a hd dvd player it costs another £100 & £50 for a wireless network adapter i’ve only just switched 2 a ps3 this week with games like haze, final fantasy XIII, grand turismo & ps3 home being released soon it was a must also i owned a 360 for 3 years and in that time ive had 4 diffrent 360’s due to malfunction which takes a month to recieve a new console from microsoft as there backed up with broken 360 i know ps3 have been slow off the mark with making games but most of the big games come out on both consoles get a ps3
