Xbox 360 Elite Rival: $400 40GB PS3 Coming This Christmas?
Filed under: Sony Playstation 3, Xbox 360

According to a reliable mole who apparently has a “great track record”, the 80GB model may be taking the price point of the current 60GB model at $499 once all the stocks have been juiced out, which should be very soon indeed. Not only this, but the 80gb price reduction would also allow a 40GB console to be born, costing $399.
The price cuts aren’t the only good news with the new packages reported to be coming with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray, which is hardly surprising seeing as Sony had been throwing Spiderman 2 in with the PSP value pack for years.
In the UK the 40GB model is said to be around about £350, which funnily enough, would make it a much closer rival to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Elite console, a crucial move.
Finally, the PlayStation 2 will receive a further price drop, bringing it down to the bargain price of $99. Now if you ask me, at the moment the PS2 looks like it has a better selection of games than the PS3, so this will ensure Sony that the cheaper console will continue to sell well.
Do Microsoft have a reason to be worried?
Which do you prefer? The Xbox 360 Elite? Or the Sony PlayStation 3?
Let us know how you think the changes could affect the market.

“Now if you ask me, at the moment the PS2 looks like it has a better selection of games than the PS3″
The PS2 has a better selection of games than any console ever made. It has more games than any other console, period.
Still £50 more + the price of an hdmi lead, – the the price of wifi if you use it, 80gig less HD space but I guess if you want Blu-ray and don’t mind fewer games to play then it’s pretty good value, personally i have a wired router, don’t need Blu-ray and will pick up a 360 premium + Bioshock and Halo 3 this month.
I think both systems are good value depending on what your preferences are but for my money 360 has the games.
Well, I have a xbox 360 and I really like it so no contest in my mind. But if you truly want that high def expierance, you may want the PS3 (!!Blue Ray!!). Also if you like competitoin you may want 360 because of the gamer score and !!!XBOX LIVE!!! Any way, if you know what you want, go get it we need more poeple playing games with depth intead of cool controllers,
Also, the difference in HD between the composite and HDMI is 720p / 1080i (composites highest) and 1920i * 1080p (HDMI) HDMI is much better
Premiums now come with the HDMI ports, so look at your box (it will have a cool sticker that says HDMI) if you buy a premium 360 ($349.99 USD), but the Elite ($449.99 USD) is garanteed to be HDMI equipped.
im not biased as im a nintendo fanboy, but the ps3 to me is far more enticing at a similar price point than the 360 elite.
reasons being i like it has built in wifi, id never use/need 120gb hdd, it has the ability to play the biggest game library (ps2), reliable, free internet, HOME, not just FPS, and it just looks sleeker. admittedly halo3 and bioshock are cool but the 360 has never had the variety in games i crave and for all the good things i hear about the size of its gaming library theres really not that many AAA titles and the ones that are are all racing/FPS type games. having said that its better than the ps3’s state of affairs but the ps3 is just cooler.
Also come on microsoft wheres the innovation
Look.
Most of us will own a PC, a Wii and a 360. That’s just the way it is until the price comes down–and the more features they pull (hardware support for PS1 and PS2) the more they shoot themselves in the foot.
Look at Lair. Heaven? COD4 that looks like COD2 with modern weapons? They haven’t got the software chops.
Their only prayers this fall are TimeShift (with it’s apparent killer Single Player and MULTIPLAYER) and Ratchet and Clank for the diehard fan who has to have that game. And truthfully, as much as we all feel good about Ted at Insomniac–his last Ratchet game was a rip (arenas from three) and Resistance was a lesson in how not to make a launch title brown and boring.
Wii=Mario, Smash Bros, 360 gives us a wealth of options–as much as it pains me to see them continue to ship their decrepit dry mount and overall quality until they get the size and the heat down on their innards.
Well, I have both an XBOX 360 Elite and a PS/3. Both are nice boxes. But until the PS/3 has some decent games (and they must run at a decent framerate) there is no reason to buy one. I have played RFOM completely through like 4 or 5 times now – excellent game. FEAR (one of my favorite games) sucks on it compared to the 360 or PC versions. Motorstorm — very pretty, plays well. Couple other racing games are good. But there just isn’t anything else to do with it. I have both the BlueRay (obviously) and the add-on HD-DVD for the 360. While I don’t buy many of either ($25-30 for a movie is ridiculous when DVD’s are half of that), I tend to buy the HD-DVD versions when I do (usually cheaper and always have more features).
Overall, I am glad I have one — especially the one with the Emotion chip. But honestly, it was not a good investment, at least not yet… maybe 2008 will be the year. At any rate, with soooo many 360 games coming out this holiday season, it will take something spectacular to get me to buy for the PS/3. I am honestly a little disappointed. It is such a nice looking box. If it were not for the “Folding at Home” app, it would just sit there most of the time in the off mode. I can’t even imaging the flack 360 would get if the situation was reversed…
Ever since i bought my ps3 my xbox 360 has lain dormant under my tv. IMO the ps3 has better selection of games. this may seem a ridiculous statement but take into account that i dont like shooters and my reason may apear clearer.
when people talk about 360 games they shout “halo” “Gears” “bioshock”. i say so what. by christmass the PS3 will have Resistance (for the shooter fans) Folklore (a genious RPG with great gameplay), Warhawk, home, Lair (since the update i have heard nothing but good), Heavenly Sword along with more downloadable games.
The ps3 is an all round console where the 360 is a FPS magnet. Most titles which are not FPS games are multiplatform (ps3 cant use them then neither can xbox) although i would prefer more games to be multiformat so more people can enjoy it.
I by far consider the ps3 the console of the future. it is stylish and sleek while being whisper quiet without any large external power adaptors. the only one of the three not to. the ps3 is a better built machine and will spend its lifetime improving as the ps2 did.
by inovating developers are given more power, they just need to learn how to use it
@Rorkimaru
Nice try Rorkimaru but everybody can tell your just another sad Sony fanboy pretending to own both machines just to try and give your views some credence. Fanboys like you are so sad and pathetic, if you were getting paid by Sony at least you’d be doing a job but no, you’re just the kind of pathetic loser that has nothing better to do. This goes for xbox fanboys that make up crap too.
If none of you fanboys have anything honest to say do then don’t bother saying anything at all.
Rorkimaru you’re a terrible liar, if i were to play you at poker you’d lose your shirt.
Ugh! I am getting so BORED of the PS3 fanboys vs Xbox 360 fanboys arguments EVERYWHERE on the web. This thread was looking pretty reasonable, until Mick stepped in and started the whole cliche going again.
It was refreshing to read Daniel’s comments – neutral and honest and focusing on the fact that its great that these consoles are attracting more people to gaming. The more people we have gaming, the more money for games development. And the more money for games development, the better the games are gonna be for us all.
I personally used to be a Playstation 2 die-hard all the way, and always imagined myself buying the PS3. However, I believe that Sony have overestimated themselves with the price point. At this point I have neither console, but as it stands, I will have an Xbox 360 by Christmas. Even with the rumoured PS3 price drop (I am in Europe), it would STILL be too expensive to justify buying it over the 360. With premium games on both consoles so expensive as it is, it just makes no sense to shell out obscene amounts of cash for the console as well (unless, of course, you are also in the market for a BlueRay player).
The fact of the matter is, if you are a true PS fanboy, you will buy the PS3. However, it is hard to argue with the fact that the Xbox 360 is one hell of a proposition right now.
You say the Premiums sometimes come with HDMI now? That must suck I thought one of the main reasons you would want the elite is the HDMI, I certainly wouldnt buy it for being black and more HDD.
The premium is a really good price and console but if you own a high-end pc I think x360s are a bit redundant? All the best games go to pc off the 360 anyway (gears, lost planet, bioshock, no doubt halo 3 will eventually) and pc has xbox live too. [sorry for going off topic there]
Personally I’m a sony fan but I can see the appeals of both consoles
