The rights of sequel to Romero’s 1968 horror ‘Night of The Living Dead’ were bought after a flurry of interest by The Weinstein Co on Tuesday night. ‘George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead’ was premiered on Saturday in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival and completely spooked audiences.
The Weinstein Co paid an estimated $2 million to $2.5 million for the rights and, unlike other offers, includes and theatrical release commitment. R-Rated horror films haven’t done particularly well this summer, though it seems The Weinstein Co had the Midas touch with ‘Halloween’, which had a record-breaking Labor Day opening.
The Artfire Films/Romero-Grunwald Productions film was written and directed by Romero and produced by Peter Grunwals, Art Spigel, Sam Englebardt and Ara Katz. Executive producers were Dan Direman, John Harrison and Steve Barnett.
