eBay‘s reputation is constantly being damaged nowadays with huge corporations and companies pointing the finger at them for not finding the people responsible for the fakes and counterfeits. The world’s largest and probably most well-known cosmetics group, L’Oreal has launched some pretty serious legal action against eBay.
This includes blaming the online auction company for not doing enough to tackle the sale of counterfeits, the company said. In eBay’s defense, they argue that they clamp down on all cases of counterfeiting notified to it by the firms.
“L’Oreal has been facing an increasing volume of illicit trade in fake fragrances and fake cosmetic products on some online auction sites,” L’Oreal said in an emailed statement.
“Consequently, L’Oreal has decided to take legal action to protect the consumers, preserve the quality of its selective luxury distribution network and defend the reputation of its trademarks.”
A French newspaper claims L’Oreal estimated the damage done to its business from the counterfeit problem at eBay at “probably several million euros”.
“EBay is not a victim because it gets a cut from each transaction and advertisement, real or fake,” the newspaper quoted L’Oreal saying.
