Sony PSP vs Nintendo DS
Now this is something I am sure has been discussed a thousand times before, but for me it was just recently that my daughter kept asking for a Nintendo DS, but as we have two Sony PSP’s it seems stupid to go and buy a DS or is it.

I thought it would be interesting to get some gamers feedback about the Nintendo DS and finding out if it is worth owning one of them as well as the Sony PSP.

I brought all 3 main gaming consoles (Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3 and Xbox 360) for different reasons, but as I have never used a Nintendo DS I cannot comment on how good it is.

So people should I get a Nintendo DS or just keep with the Sony PSP as a portable gaming system?

If the majority of comments say to buy one then I will do, if not then I will not.

For me (the adult, the Dad!), I much prefer the PSP for my own gameplaying…and, by extension, my 7 year old daughter always wants to play my games on the PSP. Several of her friends have the DS, but she doesn’t seem interested in it because all the games seem “cartoony”. We already have the WII, and rather than playing Mario Galaxy or Mario Party, she’d rather help me slog through a Lara Croft game or even Resident Evil 4…or my wife with Legends of Zelda. Interesting that her gameplay preferences are following mine exactly, but as far as what she wears or how she talks, she wants to be just like her friends! Back to the topic - for gaming for children under 10, I still think the DS is the better product, but it probably won’t have much appeal for the adults in the family…or anyone over 11 or 12 for that matter. Just my opinion!

back then it was simple to say that a system is better than another, such as the deal with the Game Boy and the Sega Game Gear.If you remember the game gear had a backlit color screen and was based on the Master System, which meant that games on the MS could easily be ported to the GG without fail. these days thats not the case.in my opinion, you cant say that a system is better than another, because each system has advantages that another system doesnt have.of course Nintendo has Mario, and Mario has been around since 1981(from Donkey Kong in the arcade)and because of that game so many years ago, many people are Mario fans.In addition, because of that established fanbase, that is the reason why Nintendo can market anything with Mario on the packaging and sell an unbelieveable amount of consoles. But dont forget Mario isnt for everybody,so they have other games such as Super Smash Bros.,Mario Kart,Metroid,The Legand of Zelda,Star Fox and F-Zero.Nintendo is not really good at 3rd party games on their systems,so they dont make much of an impact as the other two,Microsoft and Sony. They must rely on their 1st party titles to make a dent in the gaming market.Nintendo’s been doing it for over 20 years now,and IT woks for them.Whether you think of them as a company thats low on technological prowess in terms of their graphical expertise on their systems-its not because they cant afford the chips necessary to compete with the big boys, but that they are an innovative company that takes steps one at a time to achieve their goals of getting their product in the hands of the consumer. Then by dropping the price-more people are willing to buy it depending on the software they are looking for.If you go to a store, and lets say they have 2 Nintendo Wii’s on sale. The Wii on the left goes for $249.99.The Wii on the right goes for $250.00.Now the interesting part is that even though its a 1 cent difference, more people would buy the cheaper one because to the consumer in general, cheaper is better.Even though the Wii’s are the same system, being that one is cheaper-guess what? You’ll buy the cheaper one. Why?It’s a natural instinct, that if you want to buy something and its expensive, youre gonna freak out because of the price.Even more so,on a side note, graphics dont make a game, gameplay does. Some people would rather play The Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess for the Wii than play NBA 09 for PS3.Despite the fact that the PS3’s Cell processor cranks out more graphical features than you can shake a Wii-mote at,for the most part,it offers up to15 to 20 hours of gameplay. The Legend of Zelda on the Wii pumps Xbox 1 level-style graphics but at the same time offers a whopping 60 hours of gameplay-provided that you dont find anything else to do to divert from your main quest. When you add all those side quests in ,thats another 20 hours for a total of 80 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY.Thats a lot of playing compared to NBA 09(15-20 hours total) or even Halo 3(35-38 hours)!!!!!! But anyway the DS must focus on a string of first party titles(Mario,Zelda,Metroid, etc.),high battery life, low price, appeal, and a touch screen to target the masses.Sony’s PSP must rely on its better -than-PS2 graphics chip(PSP-333MHz vs PS2-300MHz),PS2 ports(God of War,Tekken,Gran Theft Auto),and the ability to expand its multimedia capabilities,as well as a lower price if its to catch up to the DS,which at this point is nearly impossible.According to figures sales from NPD Group, and Enterbrain,as of Thursday,October 30th,2008,the Nintendo DS has sold over 77.54 million console units since its release in November of 2004.Meanwhile the PSP has managed to sell 41 million console units. The PSP is a sucessful system but when you compare sales records,it has CONSISTENTLY sagged behind the Nintendo DS in terms of profits.Im not going to say that one system is better but im rooting for the DS.seeing as how the DS has a continent-load of games like Mario,Final Fantasy,Castlevania,i want GAMES.dont get me wrong,i like the psp as well but sony needs to focus on games.seriously if i really wanted to watch movies or listen to music you cam buy an iTouch…OR an iPhone. As for Emulators …….i have a PC for that. But what do i know;im just a16 year old kid that typed this on his computer to prove a point that in my belief, that some people dont want to sit down and learn about getting thrir facts straight.thank you and have a nice day.

The ds is the right choise for kids, with all the games, not to mention the ds is less breakable! I mean the psp my brother got broke the first day! He turned it on and it broke! so for kids the ds is the right choise!!!!!!

  8. Paul says:

I don’t really know your daughter’s game preferences, but since she seems to want a nintendo ds, then the ds would probably be better for her. The ds has a larger game library than the psp (although with the psp, you can hack games onto it). I own both and I like both. But I like the games on the ds better!
