Sony PSP vs Nintendo DS: my daughter says DS

Sony PSP vs Nintendo DS
Now this is something I am sure has been discussed a thousand times before, but for me it was just recently that my daughter kept asking for a Nintendo DS, but as we have two Sony PSP’s it seems stupid to go and buy a DS or is it.

I thought it would be interesting to get some gamers feedback about the Nintendo DS and finding out if it is worth owning one of them as well as the Sony PSP.

I brought all 3 main gaming consoles (Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3 and Xbox 360) for different reasons, but as I have never used a Nintendo DS I cannot comment on how good it is.

So people should I get a Nintendo DS or just keep with the Sony PSP as a portable gaming system?

If the majority of comments say to buy one then I will do, if not then I will not.

Are you serious? We have 2 DS’s and one PSP, the only thing the PSP is used for, is to play old nintedo games on it. Mario on the PSP rocks! The DS has so much more to offer in terms of game library, and just unique fun. They 100’s of games, while I have yet to see a decent PSP game that is even somewhat unique.

Buy The DS, make the daughter Happy. (if she ever gets it away from you, better buy 2)

You gotta remember that your daughter is the one that wants a DS and probably has a few games in mind she would also enjoy…not you. The DS (Lite) comes in a variety of colors she can choose (white, black, and the girly pink) and is a nice piece of hardware. the touch screen works perfectly and the system has already a huge variety of games to choose from whereas the psp may be more limited for your daughter. (i say may because i dont know what games your daughter enjoys)
the DS is a great handheld..and i must admit will probably outlive the psp.

  3. martin on September 7th, 2007 4:40 pm

I own both a PSP and a DS, i must say that though the DS was a late addition to my collection (purely to see what the hype was all about), i have not really touched the PSP since. Then again, that may be because my time has become more limited for playing games, which makes the DS the ideal handheld.
I do warn though, that your wife may force you to buy another after trying it out, as will your mother in law and aunt, which could turn out to be quite costly in the long term.

    I love my PSP!!!

  5. john on September 7th, 2007 7:10 pm

the ds is a very good robust system. It has a large library of fun, quality and interesting games. There really is no surprising why it is out selling the psp. Its a better choice for a handheld system.

You’ll have no memory card issues
It has a longer battery life
More quality games and a wider library
    Costs less
Innovation written all over it, i.e. 2 screens, touchscreen, microphone, free wifi service.

  6. Jed on September 7th, 2007 8:17 pm

Easy, easy choice. Sell your 2 PSP’s and buy a DS Lite. The most valuable feature of the PSP, and I own one, is the dust cover. The DS is fun, fun, fun.

Somehow I’ve amassed about 25 games for it since its release, without even trying. A few of my favorites (all exclusives):

    Tetris DS
    Elektroplankton
    Sprung
    Hotel Dusk Room 351
    Brain Age
    Brain Age 2
    Big Brain Academy
    Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
    Castlevania Portrait of Ruin
    Trauma Center: Under the Knife
    Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
    Phoenix Wright: Justice for All
    New Super Mario Bros.
    Metroid Hunters
    Metroid Prime Pinball
    Final Fantasy 3 (3D remake)
    Lost in Blue
    Contact
    Feel the Magic
The Rub Rabbits (sequel to above)
    Lunar DS
Cooking Mama (your daughter might like this)
    Animal Crossing DS
    Pac-N-Roll
    Starfox Command
    Meteos

Not to mention all of the great GBA games you can still play with it, and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass coming soon…

There is only one handheld that matters.

The DS is more likely to have games that your daughter will like than the PSP. I actually got my father to like Brain Age on the DS, and he doesn’t speak English!!! I myself used to be a hardcore gamer (mostly made up of adolescent and early 20’s men), but find that now that I have real responsibilities I gravitate more toward the casual game category. Can’t wait to see what angry responses you get from hardcore gamers, though…

My lil sister has a DS Lite and i have a psp. i guess if your under the age of 12 and your a girl then a Ds is good because all the games are too fruity to be playing in public. I love my psp because i have so much memory on it, the Ds cannot keep up with the psp and it never will.

  9. Jane on September 8th, 2007 4:16 am

For 12 and below, DS. For older teen and adult, PSP. And PSP can play Nintendo,Sega, Genesis, N64, PS1 via emulator or homebrew application such as remote control, act as Xbox controller etc which DS cannot play other games except Nintendo. So my guess, PSP is the better buy with all the multimedia capability like browser, video, audit etc. Like I said, if your daughter is young and unknowning yet, it would be ideal you get a DS for her. For yourself…keep the PSP, she will want it when older.

i have a ds and it rocks man there is so much more fun stuff on the ds than sonys psp the ds has a game called brain age wich in your case would be beder for your child becuse shell be super smart and thay have clasic games such as mario 64 and furst shuters like metroid prime hunters (when she gets older)and fun kids games like mario kart and with nintendos wfc you can play people all around the world hey and if she gets bord with that she can use the picto chat and talk to her frineds and making picktures with the ds touch screen so yes u sould go 4 the ds

  12. Terry on September 8th, 2007 1:21 pm

Hey ill just jump straight into it!!!

There is a reson why nintendo have sold 30 million more DS’s than sony have sold psp’s

Nintendo’s content is brilliant the games (current and future) are a highly addictive for everyone where as for my psp i was board after ‘HOURS’ Seriously ive consistanly considerd takin it back, Yes its shiny and renders decent graphics but thats are far as it goes for me.

    Take your daughters advice,

Reasons to buy a DS Lite?

    Fun
    Addictive
    Great value
    Good battery life
    Great software
    Impressive hardware
Supports MP3, WI-FI, Online (browser) backwards compatibility
almost 50 million DS’s sold to date (huge community)

  13. nate on September 8th, 2007 1:40 pm

I have a psp and I love it so much I want to marry it. I always play the game…, you know games. I like the fact that the psp is so fun, specially with the one game I own on it. Though,I mostly listen to music…, actually I use my laptop to listen to music, earphones just hurt. I watch movies, but battery always die out.

Don’t buy the ds, I mean, it’s only fun. How long is fun suppose to last. Yeah, they have 100s of great games, but psp has… a game.

  14. JT on September 8th, 2007 8:25 pm

My vote goes for the Nintendo DS Lite. I’d state the reasons, but they all look like they have been covered.. 40 million people can’t be wrong right?
ITs still outselling the Psp 3:1. P

  15. Rob on September 9th, 2007 11:19 am

I still fail to find the hooplah of the DS. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen it all before. Touch screen? Been over that one since the Palm IIIe. Dual screen? Had em on computers. Nothing really strikes me as useful. The DS comes off as a novelty to me and I find the controls insufferable.

I’ve not parted company with my PSP for over a year. It goes where I go and hosts my downtime killing games and media. Admittedly the web browser is frustratingly slow for graphic rich pages, the video conversion necessity is unfortunate, and there’s some rather obnoxious items here and there (Why do I have to look at the option for the PSP Camera when they do not sell the PSP Camera in North America?)

I would say the PSP is the greatest thing since sliced bread if, like sliced bread, you’re going to use it to it’s fullest and make some impressive gadget sandwiches. The DS is what it is and nothing more. What you see is what you get. Some people do happen to like that.

“PSP vs DS, my daughter says DS”

Thats like asking is she would prefere a dolly over an action figure, assuming the daughter is a young child.

I wouldn’t even give the PSP to a young boy, its more for teenagers and up.

My mom can’t play games but actually found it easier to play my PSP than my DS. I don’t really play the DS anymore even though I can play the free DS downloadable games from a sd card, I still can’t be bothered. SimCity DS was my latest game and its OK I guess, not as good as the original on PC. Lacks the plumbing.
Don’t use my PSP that often either. When I go out I like to travel light only carrying my mp3 walkman and sometimes I don’t like that in my pocket. At home I’m on my 360 or PS3. I have a few hours a week at most on my PSP.

  17. Kariya Jin on September 9th, 2007 12:36 pm

I guess for kids a DS might be more appealing. However you shouldn’t let yourself brainwash by all the people claiming DS as no.1. For me DS didn’t give me anymore entertainment than their last gameboy advance, however you might want to try the DS before making a desicion about that.

People would think DS sell better because it’s more fun or better than PSP.. Well one thing is the huge handheld game market that kids probably make up more than half of. Another thing is how much cheaper and durable the DS is than PSP, making it a natural selection for parents who don’t want to pay another sum when their kids wear it out or break it.

I kinda find it stupid that people who comment don’t even care about PSP. Naturally that would just be to promote DS on a PSP board, something which only brainwashed DS fans would be capable of, i.e not because a lot of people own one. If you want good advice about if DS is good or not I suggest not to listen to the hardcore DS fans and rather go try it out yourself as I mentioned earlier, because no matter what we say it’s pretty much based on our own, perhaps biased opinions.

  18. erm... on September 9th, 2007 5:33 pm

Rob, you may have seen everything that’s on the DS before, but haven’t you also seen everything on the PSP befo too? unless you don’t own a PC i mean. Emulators? PC. Music? PC. Innovation? Well, it’s not even existant on the PSP.
‘d say the DS, but Kariyaa is correct as i guess i am what you’d consider a NFanboy and you should probably try the DS out for yourself.

  19. Carlos on September 10th, 2007 7:20 am

You know, I once almost bought my wife a Zune, when she wanted an IPOD. Thank god I didn’t.

  20. SkaHunter on September 10th, 2007 9:10 am

You should buy a ds, there are many many great games.
    Elite beat agents
    New Super Mario Bros
    Advance Wars
    Yoshi’s Island DS
    Both Castlevania’s
    Trauma Center
    Metroid Prime Hunters
    Meteos
    Tetris DS
And this is just a small collection of what i myself own and still play regularly.

Dont touch the PSP. Sony only offer a one year guarentee and they actually dont want to know about and faults in the machinery after that other than charging you £60+ for a refurbished machine. The web is full of issues with butttons going wrong within and only just out of the guarentee, therefore given the original cost it offers poor value for money over time. In our case even a letter direct to the managing Director in the UK regarding a unit only just out of warrenty regarding faulty buttons did not produce any worthwhile result for us. As a parent I am so bitterly disappointed with the PSP as a present for my teenage son, and my experience with Sony to such an extent I will never buy another laptop, phone or entertainment device with their name on it. By contrast the DS goes on and on without a fault, it IS THE BEST VALUE ELECTRONIC DEVICE for children. I also remember excellent service and replacement of units by Nintendo withithout question on Game Boy units when things went wrong in the past, even out of warrenty which is why I recommend Nintendo. No wonder PSP is doing so badly at the moment and DS is selling well.

  22. Michael on September 10th, 2007 4:52 pm

Go with a DS. There’s a LOT of good offerings on both systems, but I think there are a lot more DS offerings that are more mass appeal than the PSP. With that, I mean there are more games that anybody can just jump into and play. There are also a lot of smaller quirky games that don’t _sound_ fun, but when you start playing it, it’s actually one of the most fun games to play. It’s a very easy system to just pick up, and it’s price tag is quite low. It’s a very good deal. Some of the best games out there right now are DS games.

  23. Adam on September 14th, 2007 10:04 pm

Ahh….DS wins hands down. Only people concerned with how good graphics are go for PSP or even PS3. Both overpriced technological failures that have no substance, just specs on paper to impress someone easily lured in by big numbers. It’s unfortunate Sony cannot reproduce PS2 or PS1, but I guess that’s business arrogance.

  24. Daniel on September 21st, 2007 11:16 am

As the majority of comments said to buy a Nintendo DS, I brought one for my daughter yesterday just as I said I would.

  25. Ryan on September 28th, 2007 10:02 am

only kids use a ds its not enough for hardcore gamers psp will always beat the ds

  26. JT on September 29th, 2007 12:25 am

Good choice going with the DS. Its nothing against the PSP. It’s just that you can count the number of good games on the psp with one hand..

i love the PSP waaaaaaaaaaaay better than the DS bacause most of my favorite games are on the PSP

  29. Marshall on August 13th, 2008 8:40 am

I’m an middle-aged adult and want no part of any games that have *cartoon* characters (Mario, Sonic, any anime, bobblehead-looking characters, etc.). That being the case, would anyone even begin to recommend a DS for me? (and no, my 7 and 9 year olds will NOT be playing this machine, just me!). I enjoy PC games (HalfLife2, Dungeon Siege, sports sims, etc.)…but want to be able to play more portably. Surely, the PSP is the better choice for me…right??

  30. sal on September 13th, 2008 8:20 am

psp vs Ds. to me , the psp is really something and it beats the ds by a few miles. movie, gaming, music for the psp. can tht be done wif the Ds? the psp screen is fantastic, the graphics are as good if not better thn a ps2. watchign mvoies are a joy. it doesnt lag at all. and music is a breeze. so easy to use. ive never tried the Ds but i dare say without trying tht the psp is great fun and value for money.

  32. Marshall on September 20th, 2008 9:26 am

For me (the adult, the Dad!), I much prefer the PSP for my own gameplaying…and, by extension, my 7 year old daughter always wants to play my games on the PSP. Several of her friends have the DS, but she doesn’t seem interested in it because all the games seem “cartoony”. We already have the WII, and rather than playing Mario Galaxy or Mario Party, she’d rather help me slog through a Lara Croft game or even Resident Evil 4…or my wife with Legends of Zelda. Interesting that her gameplay preferences are following mine exactly, but as far as what she wears or how she talks, she wants to be just like her friends! Back to the topic - for gaming for children under 10, I still think the DS is the better product, but it probably won’t have much appeal for the adults in the family…or anyone over 11 or 12 for that matter. Just my opinion!

  33. konn on October 6th, 2008 10:24 am

Not buying you’re little girl a DS is child abuse. It is, right?
    So, buy her one.

  34. amir on October 13th, 2008 11:10 pm

the pspis better than ds beacouse it can be a remote controll to the ps3

  35. amir on October 13th, 2008 11:11 pm

people who think ds is better than psp are idiots

  36. Phillip on October 30th, 2008 10:08 am

back then it was simple to say that a system is better than another, such as the deal with the Game Boy and the Sega Game Gear.If you remember the game gear had a backlit color screen and was based on the Master System, which meant that games on the MS could easily be ported to the GG without fail. these days thats not the case.in my opinion, you cant say that a system is better than another, because each system has advantages that another system doesnt have.of course Nintendo has Mario, and Mario has been around since 1981(from Donkey Kong in the arcade)and because of that game so many years ago, many people are Mario fans.In addition, because of that established fanbase, that is the reason why Nintendo can market anything with Mario on the packaging and sell an unbelieveable amount of consoles. But dont forget Mario isnt for everybody,so they have other games such as Super Smash Bros.,Mario Kart,Metroid,The Legand of Zelda,Star Fox and F-Zero.Nintendo is not really good at 3rd party games on their systems,so they dont make much of an impact as the other two,Microsoft and Sony. They must rely on their 1st party titles to make a dent in the gaming market.Nintendo’s been doing it for over 20 years now,and IT woks for them.Whether you think of them as a company thats low on technological prowess in terms of their graphical expertise on their systems-its not because they cant afford the chips necessary to compete with the big boys, but that they are an innovative company that takes steps one at a time to achieve their goals of getting their product in the hands of the consumer. Then by dropping the price-more people are willing to buy it depending on the software they are looking for.If you go to a store, and lets say they have 2 Nintendo Wii’s on sale. The Wii on the left goes for $249.99.The Wii on the right goes for $250.00.Now the interesting part is that even though its a 1 cent difference, more people would buy the cheaper one because to the consumer in general, cheaper is better.Even though the Wii’s are the same system, being that one is cheaper-guess what? You’ll buy the cheaper one. Why?It’s a natural instinct, that if you want to buy something and its expensive, youre gonna freak out because of the price.Even more so,on a side note, graphics dont make a game, gameplay does. Some people would rather play The Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess for the Wii than play NBA 09 for PS3.Despite the fact that the PS3’s Cell processor cranks out more graphical features than you can shake a Wii-mote at,for the most part,it offers up to15 to 20 hours of gameplay. The Legend of Zelda on the Wii pumps Xbox 1 level-style graphics but at the same time offers a whopping 60 hours of gameplay-provided that you dont find anything else to do to divert from your main quest. When you add all those side quests in ,thats another 20 hours for a total of 80 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY.Thats a lot of playing compared to NBA 09(15-20 hours total) or even Halo 3(35-38 hours)!!!!!! But anyway the DS must focus on a string of first party titles(Mario,Zelda,Metroid, etc.),high battery life, low price, appeal, and a touch screen to target the masses.Sony’s PSP must rely on its better -than-PS2 graphics chip(PSP-333MHz vs PS2-300MHz),PS2 ports(God of War,Tekken,Gran Theft Auto),and the ability to expand its multimedia capabilities,as well as a lower price if its to catch up to the DS,which at this point is nearly impossible.According to figures sales from NPD Group, and Enterbrain,as of Thursday,October 30th,2008,the Nintendo DS has sold over 77.54 million console units since its release in November of 2004.Meanwhile the PSP has managed to sell 41 million console units. The PSP is a sucessful system but when you compare sales records,it has CONSISTENTLY sagged behind the Nintendo DS in terms of profits.Im not going to say that one system is better but im rooting for the DS.seeing as how the DS has a continent-load of games like Mario,Final Fantasy,Castlevania,i want GAMES.dont get me wrong,i like the psp as well but sony needs to focus on games.seriously if i really wanted to watch movies or listen to music you cam buy an iTouch…OR an iPhone. As for Emulators …….i have a PC for that. But what do i know;im just a16 year old kid that typed this on his computer to prove a point that in my belief, that some people dont want to sit down and learn about getting thrir facts straight.thank you and have a nice day.

  37. niknak on November 9th, 2008 2:25 am

The ds is the right choise for kids, with all the games, not to mention the ds is less breakable! I mean the psp my brother got broke the first day! He turned it on and it broke! so for kids the ds is the right choise!!!!!!

  38. Paul on November 14th, 2008 6:42 pm

I don’t really know your daughter’s game preferences, but since she seems to want a nintendo ds, then the ds would probably be better for her. The ds has a larger game library than the psp (although with the psp, you can hack games onto it). I own both and I like both. But I like the games on the ds better!
