A HBO television series adaptation of preacher has been rumoured for a while now, with Kevin Smith, Mark Steven Johnson and Howard Deutch all being attached to direct. Fans were a little unnerved by the choice of directors, but it seems there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for fans of Preacher.
It has been rumoured that Sin City director Robert Rodriguez is circling the project and ‘he’s just one of many top-shelf directors interested in the series’. HBO hasn’t yet committed to the project but with Rodriquez on board, the project could easily be fast tracked.
Preacher follows the story of a down-and-out preacher in a small Texas town who was accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named ‘Genesis’, in an incident killing his entire congregation and flattening his church. Jesse Custer may have become the most powerful being in the whole of living existence. Driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, Custer goes on a journey across the US in an attempt to find God, who had abandoned heaven as soon as Genesis was born. He begins to learn more about his powers and finds he has the ability to command the obedience of those who hear his words. He is joined by his old girlfriend Tulip O’Hare and hard-drinking Irish Vampire, Cassidy.
The comic book series was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon. It was published between 1995-2000.
