American Idol 6 Tour Only Fills 63.3% Of Its Seats

American Idol 6’s ratings were way down and it seems that the show continues to prove to be less popular than its predecessors.
At its halfway point of the tour the top 10 finalists are far less popular than the tour last year and even the one in 2005.
It’s been reported that nearly half of the shows were below 60% of capacity and the
Lowest was 38.9% in Birmingham, Ala., hometown of 2006 winner Taylor Hicks and 2003 champ Ruben Studdard.
Apparently during last year’s first half, 17 were sell outs and another 10 exceeded 93% of capacity.
Overall, the tour has earned $12.1 million at its halfway point this year, which is far less than half of the $35.2 million it earned last year.
Why do you think that the American Idol tour is not that popular this year?

As I watched the winner of AI 5 being the target of such disrespect during AI 6 I could not help but wonder if there would be any long term effects. Do I think that this is the only reason? Not at all. But could it be part of the problem? If 64 million votes were cast to decide the winner of AI 5 .. what percentage of those voters would have atleast taken their children to the AI 6 tour?
AI 5 had Elliott, Chris & Taylor. Jordan & Blake, while talented, cannot pull the numbers needed.
American Idol totally lost its appeal when it disrespected the winner of season five. Taylor Hicks was the most original and overall talented entertainer that the show has ever had and they totally blew it by not supporting him but instead decided to push the 4th place finisher (having his song as the going home song), etc. America chose the winner but the Idol executives and the record label decided that it did not matter…they will decide whom will be pushed upon us via the radio (pay for play….again the 4th place finisher). No more idol for me…it is a farce.
My guess on the poor turnout in Bhm is because it was so obvious that American Idol made sure that NO ONE from Alabama was in picked in the final 24 and not very many from the South at all which has always support their favorites.
They snubbed the South and they snubbed the true Winner. People don’t forget.
The reasons are simple. Reason #1 — Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry and Elliott Yamin. Reason #2 — Total disrespect for Season V winner Taylor Hicks–which continues today. America chose Taylor Hicks as the winner. TPTB dismissed America’s choice by their actions and choices for Season VI. AI lost me during the AI6 auditions with their commentary (one judge in particular).
Season V had great talent all around for which Season VI was lacking.
I agree with the previous posts. The ignoring of Taylor Hicks who after all WAS the winner has lost AI a lot of fans and their support of the tour. It’s one thing to not like someone because they don’t fit the “image” but quite another to be downright rude and disrespectfull. To always search for a negative when lots of positives are staring you in the face is just wrong on all levels. Taylor brought a breath of fresh air to the show along with high numbers but the idol machine choose to ignore that. They guided the show back to the path of same old, same old, assembly line singers who would toe the corporate line with no individualism. The resulting numbers speaks volumes. If they have any sense at all TPTB will change their attitude for the next season. While I don’t think they have the balls to apologize to Taylor, I would hope the put downs will stop and give the man the credit he deserves.
Obviously you posters don’t know music because Chris Daughtry earned the right to be where he is on his own. He was the 4th runner up on last season’s Idol, but he is a STAR! Taylor Hicks is NOT! Chris Daughtry and his band’s self-titled debut album sold more than 1 million copies after just 5 weeks of release, becoming the fastest selling debut rock album of all time. In its ninth week of release, the album reached number 1 on the Billboard charts, edging out the Dreamgirls soundtrack. Daughtry is the fourth most successful American Idol contestant in history, behind Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Clay Aiken, as well as the most successful non-runner-up or winner.
what I think is strange is that people act like they are mad at Taylor for winning. Well its not as if it was close between Chris and Taylor. Why aren’t people mad at Elliot and Katherine? Or America for that matter. Three people beat Chris not just one and it wasn’t like Taylor cheated or something. America voted and they chose Taylor. Idol did nothing to promote his album and radio did not play it. However, it still sold over a million copies and his concerts are all sell outs. He is a great entertainer! It is obvious that if they could have, Idol would have kept Taylor from winning. They lost me as a viewer, too.
Sincerelady, the article we are discussing was about why the AI Tour is not popular this year. No one is knocking Chris, I cannot speak for others but I DO know music. I have no problem with Daughtry’s achievements, his genre is not the music I like but that’s beside the point. However it is obvious that AI cut him all the breaks to help him get to where he is. They did nothing to support the winner America chose, in fact they ridiculed him every time they could. Taylor Hicks is still the second best selling winner and his CD sales with NO help and a miniscule amount of airplay is nothing to complain about. Had Taylor been given the same treatment as Chris Daughtry there would not be as many upset viewers and I think AI would not be looking at as many empty seats at this year’s tour. Although, honestly, the singers do not have the overall talent of the AI5 group.
