Howard Hughes Jr: The Aviator, The Billionaire, The Womanizer

Howard Hughes Jr was born on the 24th September 1905. He was an American aviator, engineer, industrialist, film producer and director. Not only that, Hughes was one of the wealthiest men in the world and one of the biggest womanizers too! He is famous for setting various world air-speed records and building the Hughes H-1 Racer and H-4 Hercules airplanes.
Howard Hughes studied at the prestigious Rice University and then at the equally prestigious California Institute of Technology. After his fathers death in 1923, Hughes inherited his father’s machine tool company. Three years later her ventured into films producing Hell’s Angels, Scarface (1932) and The Outlaw (1943).
Thanks to his mammoth wealth, Hughes was able to found his own aircraft company where he designed, built and flew his own aircraft. His most famous aircraft was The Hercules (The Spruce Goose), which was an oversized wooden seaplane designed to carry 750 passengers. The plane was created in 1947 but only flew once totalling a distance of just one mile.
Hughes was never fond of the publicity fame and wealth bought him, and eventually he became a recluse, controlling his business interests from sealed-off hotel rooms. A biography was planned in 1971 but the authors ended up in prison for fraud and so the mystery of Howard Hughes remained a mystery until his death in 1976.
In 2004, The Academy Award-winning movie The Aviator was released. The film was a biography drama film was based on the book “Hughes” by Richard Hack. Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the film follows the story of the eccentric aviation pioneer Howard Hughes following his life from 1920’s through to the 1940’s, the time in Howard’s life when he was directing and producing movies as well as test-piloting his groundbreaking aircraft. The film also touches on Hughes’s downward spiral into obsessive compulsiveness and reclusiveness.
