We all had a laugh the other day with the way Miss South Carolina Teen USA answered a question, but on the Tuesday Today Show she was a lot more focused.
When asked the question again Miss South Carolina said:
“Personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don’t know anyone else who doesn’t. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography in our education so people know how to read maps better.”
She did redeem herself with that answer but was it enough to change peoples opinion, Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss South Carolina) did say “I was overwhelmed, and I made a mistake”.
Do you agree that it was a simple mistake?

With all due respect to miss carolina, i must say i have an understanding that a beauty pagent star should be poised, intelligent, focused and beautiful, with a strong personality to compliment these features. Part of being such a role model to so many young girls and being a young lady that is expected to make a change… she should be prepared for anything and everything.
Someone competing to be Miss Teen USA should not be fluffing up a question the way she did… she needs to be strong enough (mentally) to cope with surprises and challenges such as the one she was put on the other night.

She’s just a kid. Leave her alone.

Yes, it’s so important to put this well-behaved, apparently normal kid through the wringer– and make sure we provide girls with smarter role models such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie and Briteny Spears!

Yes Sara… I am sure you know all about being a beauty queen.
Now go have another Twinkie.

“pagent”, rather than pageant.
“compliment”, instead of complement.
Broken sentences such as “Part of being such a role model … is expected to make a change” and being “put on” surprises and challenges.
And how exactly does one “fluff” a question? Was it not airy enough? Had the question become flattened with overuse?
These are emblematic linguistics from the kind of woman that thinks a beauty pageant provides role models, who believes that being pretty equates to intelligence or character, and whose priorities value such diverse qualities as looks, appearance, image, countenance, and… more looks.
I suspect Sarah is only aware that Miss Carolina screwed up because someone told her so. If she’s the kind of person who avidly enjoys beauty pageants, it’s likely she didn’t detect anything wrong at the time.

It is shameful that people will jump all over her case and try to insult her for a panick stricken moment. Ugly people will do, what ugly people do (not referring to their outside appearence, which may be ugly as well).
