Half-Life Developer says Nintendo Wii more valuable than Xbox 360 and Sony PS3
Gabe Newell, from Valve Software the developer for the popular game Half-Life has said that the popular games console Nintendo Wii will factor hugely for their future developments, Newell states that the Wii is more valuable than the Sony PS3 and also the Microsoft Xbox 360.

Although Valve Software has nothing in development at the moment for the Nintendo Wii Gabe has said that the games console “represents big opportunities as a whole”, he then went on to say that them not having any games on the Wii is “an obvious hole in our strategy.”

Gabe Newell said that when you develop a game for the Xbox 360, PS3 or even a PC you design a game around the graphics, but with the Wii you have to think about the game more fundamentally.

So what kind of game will Valve Software bring to the Wii first?

    Gabe’s thought process:
    1. Develop a popular game for the Wii that’s very cheap to make (possibly bowling).
    2. Bump price up to $50 USD.
    3. Wait for the easy cash to roll in.
    4. Put cash toward next Half-Life project.

Kidding! But I hope Valve Software treat the Wii a little more seriously than certain other developers, and not just a cash cow to fund their other projects.

Maybe the Wii will get a Half-Life port. That would be interesting. Then again, there are enough ports on the wii already.

I just wanna see more 3rd parties take the Wii more seriously and develop better games for it.

I think Valve would be making a mistake to put too much of its resources into Wii development. Yes the market will be big but 3rd party publishers just don’t get much of the Wii (or DS) owner’s money - it all goes to Nintendo. Kudos to Nintendo on this, but their system seems MUCH more closed to 3rd parties than either 360 or PS3.

Valve makes deep, rich, highly graphical games that are very immersive. Wii games that do well aren’t this type of game (at least not yet) and they will probably never hold a candle to PC, 360 or PS3 because the Wii hardware is very VERY weak CPU and GPU wise. It’s the same thing with the mobile phone game market - if Valve spins off a mobile gaming business or partners with someone to do it, that’s great, but if they start taking away from their true greatness to chase Nintendo’s dusty trail… It’s not like the Wii could do a decent version of Half Life 2.

Daggre - you just don’t get what Gabe was saying:
“Gabe Newell said that when you develop a game for the Xbox 360, PS3 or even a PC you design a game around the graphics, but with the Wii you have to think about the game more fundamentally.”
Sure the CPU/GPU aren’t at the level that the PS3/Xbox are at, but there’s a limit to how good graphics can feasibly get.
Gamers the world over are asking for a new spin on the gameplay itself, not how good of a new coat of paint that can be put on an old game

lol Daggre you do know the wii is the top selling this gen right? that alone will attract more 3rd partys, also its the cheapest to make games for..making it MUCH more OPEN to 3rd parties than the 360 and ps3…and i mean MUCH cheaper to make games for, and no..it’s not weak..its just not as strong as the others
