President Bush To Commemorate Katrina Anniversary
By: Daniel Chubb | August 27, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive natural disaster in U.S. history. It swamped the entire city of New Orleans, killed 1,800 people across the Gulf Coast, destroyed or severely damaged more than 200,000 homes and made more than 800,000 people homeless overnight.
The Bush administration is still facing charges of an inadequate response, for the way it handled the crisis, and more recently, for not spending more time on it.
The federal government has provided more than $114 billion in aid, $96 billion of which has been spent or is available for states to draw from.
First lady Laura Bush will also be accompanying the president on the Gulf Coast visit.
