“I am deeply saddened by the loss of two Canadian soldiers who died today in Afghanistan.”
This was the reaction of Peter Gordon Mackay, Canada’s Minister of National Defence on Thursday. The soldiers, along with their Afghan interpreter were killed when their light armoured vehicle hit a land mine approximately 50 kilometres west of Kandahar City. The fatal explosion also injured another Canadian soldier and two Canadian journalists.
One of the soldiers has been identified as Master Corporal Christian Duchesne, based out of Valcartier, Quebec. The other soldier’s family members have been notified but his name has been withheld at their request. Mackay added with the ofllowing statement: “Let us never forget these brave soldiers, whose self-sacrifice served to make life better for others.”
It’s all good honouring the brave soldiers, but I’m sure the question on most people’s minds is, when exactly will our troops be coming home?
