The rumour of a G.I Joe movie has been circulating the internet for a while now but thankfully someone has now confirmed it. Variety is reporting that The Mummy series director Stephen Sommers has signed on to direct a big screen, live-action G.I. Joe movie.
The studio is hiring a writer as soon as possible with rumours that it could be Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean, Collateral, Derailed, 30 Days of Night) who will get the job. He certainly has the talent for it. Paramount is fast-tracking the project for a close summer 2009 release, meaning production will start this February.
The film, which would include characters Cobra Commander and Serpentor, has the potential to be a fun army action film unlike we’ve seen before. At the moment, we’ve seen loads of war films that are set in Iraq, so it’ll be great to have something different.
Casting announcements are bound to begin soon and as soon as we see names, it’ll be easy to see what kind of film they are going for. The writers will have to make sure that they watch how much patriotism they put into the film - too much could be pretty scary to some viewers.
