The Princeton’s Review’s annual list of the Top 20 party schools has been released and the Number One spot has been filled by West Virginia University. I’m sure the school administrators aren’t in the mood to party after this news!

The school has made the list seven times in 15 years, despite the school’s efforts to diminish underage drinking and the rowdy behaviour that goes with it. The University hasn’t taken the top spot since 1997 and was number 3 last year - there have obviously been a whole lot of partying going on!

Senior Katie O’Hara has said WVU is Number One because, “no matter what kind of party you want it’s here — bars, fraternities, house parties. … If you want to take shots all night, there’s a bar; no matter what you want to do, it’s there.”

But, although highlighting the partying, Katie seems to have a head on her shoulders and said her and her friends “know how to manage their time. They know when to party and when not to,”

Hmm, if that was the case I’m sure the school wouldn’t have got it’s number one ranking! All the results are in the 2008 edition of “The Best 366 Colleges”, which is based on a survey of 120,000 college students at those schools during the 2006-07 year.

Coming in a close second was the University of Mississippi, followed by the University of Texas-Austin, The University of Florida and the University of Georgia.
New WVU President Mike Garrison, focussing on the positive rather than the rankings, said “I’m focused on the way this university changes people’s lives, the research that we do and the service we provide to the state of West Virginia. This is a special place, and the whole state is proud of it.”

The Princeton Review is aimed to guide applicants to the best schools when they can’t visit the schools in person. There are 62 categories in all including: Best Campus Food, Virginia Tech; Most Beautiful Campus, Sweet Briar (Virginia); Dorms Like Palaces, Smith College (Massachusetts); and Birkenstock-Wearing, Tree-Hugging, Clove-Smoking Vegetarians, Hampshire College (Massachusetts).

The Princeton Review is not affiliated with Princeton University and is a New York company known for test preparation courses, educational services and books.
