Own an Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii: Do I buy a Sony PS3 for Blu-ray

Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii
I brought an Xbox 360 as soon as they came out a long time ago and although it’s a known fact that they have overheating problems mine has never broke down, but it does get hot and is very noisy.

As I have a nice big collection of Xbox 360 games I will not change console now, but I did buy a Nintendo Wii to see what all the fuss was about…I know why now.

While the Nintendo Wii is not my main games system for games that I play on my own, it does take over the gaming when we have people over.

The Nintendo Wii is amazing for groups of people and I have never known another gaming system so good at getting everyone involved at all ages, although the graphics are a bit rubbish it is the games console of choice when I have people over.

Sony PS3

Now here is my problem:
If you were in my situation and owned the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, would you buy a Sony PS3 for just Blu-ray and Playstation 3 games that are not on the Xbox 360?

I am in the same situation and I’ve decided to wait until the PS3 is cheaper if I’m ever going to get one. I’ve never liked Metal Gear(story is rubbish along with the retarded guards and cardboard box nonsense) and I don’t see any other exclusive games on the horizone to warrant the PS3 purchase. As far as the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray debate, I owned an HD-DVD player for the 360 but ultimately returned it because DVD’s played through the 360 and upconverted through the VGA cable looked pretty good. When the format wars are over I’ll just buy a dedicated player for about 100 bucks and at that time I’ll be able to get any movie on the “winning” format… if there is a winner.

  2. Bob says:

    NO!
Paramount has just switched sides to HD-DVD.

  3. Tony says:

(Personally) I refuse to buy Blu-Ray or HD-DVD media or hardware, until one of the two format wins.

Besides, the PS3 is going down in flames… You’re investment on the PS3 has twice the risk; You risk the PS3 selling very little and there for game developers abandoning it… AND you risk Blu-Ray failing and being stuck with an obsolete format, (as the prophecies have foretold)

  4. sean says:

Wait. But I definitely think it will be worth it to get one. As soon as the big titles start to come out like MGS4 and FF13, amoung others, the ps3 will start to sell like crazy in japan and even in the americas. Games like Littlebigplanet, littlebigplanet, littlebigplanet are going to be absolutely amazing if you have any imagination, or curiosity about what people in a creative community can create.

Blu-ray seems to be selling better than hd-dvd the moment. I’d say that if you are prepared to go into HD video right now, the PS3 is your best choice in terms of players, if only because you get SO MUCH MORE from it than you would from a standard HD-player. If worst comes to worst and blu-ray fails, at least you’ll be able to play some exclusive games.

The PS3 is NOT going down in flames. If anything it’s doing better now than it was three months ago, and there have only been a few new releases. With the holiday season and the release of a bunch of exclusives you can be sure that the PS3 is going to broaden it userbase quite considerably.

But like I said, just wait, unless you want it now.

    But don’t go HD-DVD now.

  5. Mike says:

Simply buy the HD-DVD attachment for the Xbxo 360… $200 versus $550(CAD), and you get Hi-Def disc support either way.

  6. jks says:

The Wii is a simplistic device meaning it’s got very problems
what more would you expect for something that’s ORIGINALLY shipped with a price tag o’ US$250?

The other two consoles are mean machines
bugs are inevitable but then again why spend so much on something so predictable? Cars and PCs get faster each year, cellphones get smarter quite hackeneyed isn’t it?

    The Wii’s different
simplicity is the key isn’t it?
Its hard for people to imagine pressing A everytime they wanna throw something now do they?
imitating a throw is way simple….

Talking about buying the PS3 I’d say wait for a while
let the prices go down because you really wouldn’t be able to find much blu-ray media…….

Yeah get a PS3. Plenty of titles to choose from now (Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, etc) plus plenty more blockbusters hitting this year (Unreal 3, Haze, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, etc) plus plenty more coming next year that I don’t even have to name.

  8. bluntman says:

PS3 is going down in flames…both now and for the forseeable future. To dismiss it altogether would be foolish as it carries the playstation brand, however to put my opinion onto this sensitive topic I will say this; The 360 is the big winner as far as triple A titles are concerned. To disagree would be arrogant and wrong and maybe even fanboy-ish.HD-DVD is actually goin reasonably stronger than first anticipated but whether it can sustain its momentum when things between the two formats really kick off is another question. The PS3 has little going for it in terms of exclusivity anymore and seems to be relying on futer promises such as Home and Blu-ray.Ps3 has alot of ground to make up and in the end it might not be a case of blu ray making the ps3 but a case of the ps3 being the downfall of the format altogether! We shall see as it all pans out but for me, a hardcore gamer who doesn’t give a rats what console im playing the next great game on, things couldnt look brighter

    Dont worry to much men!!!
    Life its very easy.
If you are not sure, dont buy one, period.

But take my words, in one year, you will want to buy one.
And bet that if you really love playing great games, you will have one by 2010.
The xbox 360 has just stop selling, every month microsoft sell a lot less xbox 360 that they did the last year, they are at 10-11 millions consoles sold the full 2007 (when they forecast more than 15 millions by june) add that many have to buy more than 1 console and you see the small market they have.
The xbox 360 is still in the market just because microsoft have a lot of money and they dont care if they dont make any dime (cause they havent make a dime you know), better for them kill the video console industry that give it to sony and nintendo (that they refuse use Direct X the last generation was the only reason microsoft created the xbox ).
If the company life depended of their console they already have pull it off (ask SEGA), huge decreased sales, only sell in US, since this month the xbox 360 sell less than any other console in almost any country.

All this will make the developer support switch almost exclusive to sony and nintendo, microsoft could sell the xbox at almost 99 dollars, but who buy crap no matter the price, nobody want garbage even for free.
Microsoft will learn again that millions of dollars in PR, Ad and FUD, dont make what you sale a good product, when in fact is crap, like zune, like vista, like well everything they sale.
Instead all this PR,Ad and FUD, come back in the form of costumer angry, disapointment, product insatisfaction, loyalty lost, law suits, etc.

  10. Chris says:

I strongly suggest purchasing a Playstation 3. Please ignore Tony’s comments of pure ignorance. Purchasing a PS3 as a Blu Ray player isn’t a bad move, but I hope you aren’t under the impression that it’s all it can do.

On the topic of the high definition format “wars”, Blu Ray has been outselling HD DVD 3 to 1 for several months, with peaks as high as 6 to 1. Paramount’s defensive move with HD DVD is its last stand, which won’t lasy very long at all. For the past 4 months, HD DVD has been flailing amongst a battle that it can’t win. Blu Ray has much, much more support than HD DVD, and you can obtain a Blu Ray player internally with the Playstation 3 for only $499.

In my opinion, the Playstation 3 is an amazing console, and from a factual point of view, it has incredible features. Many of these aspects are completely necessary for this generation, and the Xbox 360 and Wii lack several of said features.

    The Playstation 3 offers:
    -An HDMI output
    -Built in Blu Ray player
    -Support for 7 controllers
    -4 USB ports
    -Bluetooth
-An upgradeable hard drive (I am currently using a 200 GB hard drive on my PS3)
    -Resolutions of up to 1080p
    and an SD/Memory card input

This is adressed to whomever else needs to comment: There is absolutely no need to criticize the Playstation 3 in this article. Saying that the Playstation 3 is “going down in flames” is absolutely ludicrous, and should be considered as Nintendo or Microsoft propaganda. Either that, or Tony has an extremely biased point of view.

If games are your main priority, then buying a Playstation 3 today is a very smart move. Current exclusives such as Resistance, Motorstorm, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma E are absolutely beautiful on the PS3, and the gameplay is wonderful. To be honest, Resistance is so fun that I’ve been playing it online every week since November.

One of the most important reasons to buy a Playstation 3 now is because of its upcoming exclusives. Warhawk is coming out in only one week! Come August 28th, I will be blasting my friends out of the air during online dogfights, and hijacking tanks during Capture the Flag. Heavenly Sword and Lair are also coming within 2 weeks, and exclusives like:

Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Haze, Echochrome, Unreal Tournament 3, and Hot Shots Golf 5 are all arriving this year.

If you decide against buying a PS3 now, you should definitely purchase one for the following games of early next year:

    LittleBigPlanet

    Killzone 2

    Metal Gear Solid 4

    and God of War III

Those four games will be some of the greatest of all time. You should definitely watch some trailers and look into the games.
