The Open Source revolution has taken the technology world by storm. The fact that companies are prepared to develop software as good as the competition, if not better, and make it free to anyone who wants it, it changing the software world.
OpenProj from Projity is the next step in the open source revolution with an incredible average download rate of one download every 35 seconds, which puts OpenProj in the 99th percentile on Sourceforge.
The goal of OpenProj is to compete with Microsoft Project which has found its way onto 7% of all desktops in the world. That is a massive 28 million users that are potent customers for the latest FREE project software, OpenProj. Buying equivalent software costs hundreds of dollars and remember, you will probably have to cough up that amount again, or possibly more to upgrade every few years.
OpenOffice is testimony to the success of open source software. I have used OpenOffice for nearly two years and I will not be going back to Microsoft Office. Why pay for a service that is on offer for free somewhere else? It makes sense to use open source if the software can do the same job because its free. That’s why over 100 million people use OpenOffice.
“The Projity team has received tremendous feedback from key industry leaders, who are already using OpenProj to satisfy their desktop needs,” said Marc O’Brien, CEO, Projity. “We have been working on this launch for a while. The Proijty team is excited to provide worldwide usage of a free and open source project management solution that is a complete replacement of Microsoft Project and other desktop solutions. OpenProj’s familiar user interface and ability to open existing native Microsoft files makes migrating both free and seamless”
What they say about OpenProj
The founder of Soucefourge, Larry Augustin, has called OpenProj “an important addition to the open source marketplace” as well as saying he thought OpenProj was a full equivalent to Microsoft Project and that it is a “terrific addition”.
The Chief Executive Officer of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth, called OpenProj “an exciting addition to the range of professional desktop applications that are available on the free software market today,” and he gave his congratulations to the OpenProj team at Projity for this “milestone release”
Francois Bancilhon the CEO of Mandriva said “we are very excited by the OpenProj software: it clearly fills a gap and we are glad there is now a robust and complete solution for project management from the open source community.”
At Linux , the current leader in open source operating systems, the Linux director of marketing said that he thought, “users will be seeking tools like OpenProj to help them complete their daily business tasks”. Fabio Erculiani, the CEO of Sabayon Linux, said: “This is what Market wants. Every day a new brick towards the Open Source platform completeness is put, and this is a big one”.
What we say about OpenProj
We have searched long and hard for some negative reviews of OpenProj by respected figures in the industry, but the honest truth is, we cannot find any. OpenProj is being well received across the internet and everyone seems to be very happy with the program’s performance so far.
Therefore we spoke to some of the people in business that would be possible users of this software, such as planning engineers and planning consultants. One planning consultant said: “The trouble is that in the planning industry, there is not real dominant software for planning. Planning engineers will either use Microsoft Project or Primavera Project Planner or some other sort of software. There is no rock software. If a planning engineer comes onto a project and that project is all on a type of software that he/she is not familiar with, then that engineer will have to learn how to use the new software and this uses up a lot of time adn money unnecessarily. The industry needs a new rock and a free software package like OpenProj may be it.”
We think OpenProj is a brilliant new addition to the open source collection. I personally have used OpenOffice for nearly two years simply because its logical. If you are offered two things that do the same job but one costs a lot of money and one is totally free, then which are you going to choose? I know I would choose the free one and this is why OpenProj is enjoying, and will continue to enjoy, such success.
What do you think about OpenProj?
If you already use project software, then why not download OpenProj? You have nothing to lose as its completely free and it could save you a lot of money in the future when you have to buy upgrades for Microsoft Project or other software.

I just downloaded OpenProj, and I love it! Its UI is very similar to that of MS Project 2000, which I USED to use. It has all the bells & whistles of MS Project, but at a much cheaper price-like for free! Why pay upwards of $1000 per user for a bloated, piece of garbage, when you can have a leaner, meaner, far less expensive counterpart for free?! Why would anyone do that in these days & times? I can’t think of a good reason for that…
