NBA Referee Tim Donaghy Admits Betting Scandal: Gambino Mafia Ties
By: Daniel Chubb | August 18, 2007 | 1 CommentIn news that is shocking the entire NBA, referee Tim Donaghy has pleaded guilty to passing betting tips to professional gamblers and Tim Donaghy also bet on NBA games he refereed in.
This NBA betting scandal is part of an FBI investigation linked with the mafia crime organisation, the Gambino Mafia family.
Tim Donaghy has been a NBA referee for 13 years but he told the judge: “I was in a unique position to predict the outcome of NBA games. Some of my picks included games I had been assigned to referee.”
Tim Donaghy has also said he is seeking treatment for a gambling addiction. He passed informally and tips on NBA he officiated in to James “Baba” Battista, a professional gambler also known as “Sheep”, and Thomas Martino, who are apparently linked with the Gambino Mafia family.
Tim Donaghy faces 25 years in jail and a $500,000 fine.
