Having only just joined the SKYPE bandwagon I was a little dismayed after 1 day to find that the whole system was down!

I thought it might have been a installation problem as I had issues downloading it in the first place (I live in the Middle East where it is blocked by the network providers but found a little loop hole through download.com) so I deinstalled and reinstalled and still there were the logging on/connection problems. I then did a bit of research (I can’t log on to any Skype pages incl. help etc as they are blocked too) and discovered news articles stating the issues.

So it seems many people are back on but I’m not yet and whenever it comes back for a minute or so (sometimes just a second) I try to search my friends again (obv I lost the records of them thro the de/reinstall process) and it’s not able to find them - only the ones seemingly that weren’t hit by the problem.

What a shame! I will continue to use Skype as it is a real godsend for us here to be able to avoid paying monopoly prices and I just hope that they get it back up and running shortly as it is def. over the 24hours now that they initially stated.

    James here…

I used to love Skype… it has been so good for me… but now I hate Skype… There comes a time in every man’s (or for that matter, woman’s) life, when they have have to make a (life changing… well sorta) choice and move on…

    I certainly have made mine…

I have moved on to something better than Skype… its called Damaka. (http://www.damaka.com)

Like a frog in a well, I thought Skype was the best software… but since I have started using damaka, I have fallen in love with it. The software seem like Skype… but has WAY MORE FEATURES than Skype… plus I love the UI… its simple and very easy to use.

I found the call quality to be better and video quality beats everyone (Skype, yahoo and the gang) It has some really great features like desktop sharing and videomail. And hey it has free voicemail (not like Skype)… now who doesn’t like free???

    Well, check it out yourself…

Our entire building has been having severe network problems Thursday and Friday. Tracked it down to one PC running Skype. Unplugged it and everyone else can go back to work.

Seems that they should have provided themselves a “downgrade to previous version” alternative since it seems to have been coincident with their latest SW upgrade…

My power was out for five days after a storm last winter. Did I cancel my power? No. I was in Australia on vacation and the satellites were affected by solar issues that affected all satellite communications, so I wasn’t able to use my ATM card or credit card for 24 hours. Did I close my bank account? No. My car engine light came on and it ended up in the shop for a day. Did I sell my car or promise to never buy another Volkswagen? No. S–t happens, people.

Skype has been a revolution that has allowed 220 million people either free or very cheap phone calls. $29 a year for unlimited Sky-Out in the US. That’s $2.41 a month. I currently have Vonage, which costs 14.99 month for 500 minutes of out-bound calls (free in-bound), plus about four dollars in taxes. So the tax cost more than a month of Skype. To cover the few times when things go wrong (like when the power goes out), I have a T-Mobile pre-paid cell phone - I pay $100 for 1000 minutes that don’t expire for a year. Anybody b–ching about Skype being down for a few days seriously needs to get a life.

Tom, I totally agree - I just wanted to say that I was confused by it all until I researched and found that there were major issues with skype and it wasn’t just me!

Mine’s up and running again and like I said before, I think it’s a blessing for us here to be able to get it as it is blocked by the sole provider and I like that I’m not having to pay a terrible service provider lots of money. Their service still has bad moments, robotic voices, crossed lines and connection issues and I pay huge amounts for the privilage so I am enjoying Skype and all it’s benefits.

I think the problem is that in today’s day and age everyone expects things to work fantastically well, fixed immediately or actually never have any problems at all but just need to remember what it was like when the telephone was first invented, when computers first came on the scene, internet first happened - we’ve come a long way and still so far to go with many more issues like these so I do think that instead of complaining we just accept and look forward to tomorrow’s world…

Well you can tell I’m happy cos my skype’s up and running again!!!
