Standard DVD format may limit Xbox 360 UT3: What do you think?

Unreal Tournament 3

It has been said over at GamesIndustry.biz that the DVD-9 format may in fact limit the amount of maps that are found in the Xbox 360 version of UT3 (maybe this is true), Mark Rein who is the vice president of Epic Games said during a session at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival that he appreciates the extra storage space on Blu-ray discs over the standard DVD format.

Update – Talking about the Unreal Tournament 3 title that will be releasing on the Sony PS3 before the Xbox 360 he said that they will have fewer maps on the 360 version but the Blu-ray has really gave us a lot of leg room. Unreal Tournament 3 game on the Xbox 360 has been delayed until 2008.

Can you elaborate on the above?

multiple disc, pc has done it for years

Yeah, sure, do multiple disc. Why not? PC has done it for years right!? You know why PC has been able to do it for years? Because the medium’s data is compressed like crazy and it then expands it upon INSTALLING IT TO THE HD! In case you were wondering Xbox 360′s, unlike PC’s, DO NOT all have built in HD’s. This means that they cannot build a game that requires the built in HD without making millions of gamer’s feel alienated because they have the core system. Also, others have mentioned having a seperate one for multi and single player. This would still inhibit the amount of maps available and you would constantly be changing DVD’s if the maps were spread out like some others have even tried suggesting. It’s just not feasable.

They have stated in press releases, “we’re a small company.” This leads me to believe that they’re going to do everything in their power to maximize profit for themselves. Even if this means releasing a gimped UT3 version for the Xbox360 and charging for maps and other downloadable content that will simply “come with” the PC and PS3 versions.
