German automakers want weight-based system to regulate CO2 emissions levels

As we know the European Commission are leaping out in front of the rest of the world when it comes to drive down the carbon-dioxides emissions of cars, and one plan has become popular with many of automakers in Europe. The plan of choice these car makers would like to see come in is a weight-based system, this would then regulate the CO2 emissions levels, and Audi are one of the biggest fans of this proposal.

The European lawmakers would like to reduce the average CO2 emissions to 130 grams per kilometer by the year 2012, current levels average about 160g/km. This new plan would hit German car makers most in Europe, as they have the largest fleet of large and powerful cars that demand more fuel. It seems that French and Italian car makers will not worry about this ruling, as they are known for making small and fuel-efficient models.
